Never Take Anything For Granted In Life!

Have you noticed how we sometimes take the everyday pleasures for granted?  We just assume that everything will keep going the way we expect them to go until something happens that reminds us that nothing in life is a guarantee.

Last night, we were relaxing and watching an old rerun of 'The Closer' on TV when suddenly everything went dark.

Scurrying around, I found two candles which I lit for a little light.  I knew we had about half a dozen flashlights in our home but who knew where they were.

We went out back and looked at the sky and I got a snap of these crazy clouds in the sky.  Had the eastern storm created a major lightening bolt which took out the transformer?  Or was it the fact that we reached 100 degrees and everyone had their A/C running that caused the outage?

Luckily, with my iPhone, I went to the Xcel website and reported the outage.  They responded that the power should be restored within 3 hours which would be right around midnight.

We hung out for a while and finally went upstairs to get some rest.  Sadly, the room was HOT without air conditioning so we tossed and turned.

At the stroke of midnight, the ceiling fan began spinning and the cool air began flowing again.

What a night!

Today I will be locating all of the flashlights in our home and make sure they are within reach for the next outage.

Sadly, I won't know who killed the guy outside the bar until I find that episode of 'The Closer' and watch it again!

So what caused the power outage?  I'm sure I will never know!

This is the wrong time of the year to lose power for more than a brief moment. I would have opted to take a ride in the AC'd car!

Hi Belinda, perhaps you needed that power outage as a reminder. Hope you have all the flashlights in a place where you can locate them now. You missed some part of The Closer but you got to watch that beautiful sky instead. No more power outages in a 100 degree weather.

This is so true Belinda, sometimes it takes an outage to make us take a look at our self. Great blog.

Hi Belinda --- sorry about that power outage, I think it's going to be a hot summer in many areas this year.

As far as the big reveal -- look in the direction of the butler.  Isn't it always the butler?

Don't I get it, Belinda. We've had an occasional power outage here too. And last week it was so hot, my primary a/c just quit... needed a new motor. With all the cooling issues all over Charlotte due to high temperatures, it took from Thursday till today to get someone out, to order a part, and install a part. Now I need to wait 2 hours for the compressor to cool down... but after almost 5 days with it hotter in my house than outside, what's another couple of hours? I can look forward to a cool evening.

I downloaded a flashlight app on my phone to use in case of emergency so I can find my candles & flashlights.  (ha) Have a great day!  Stay cool!

Belinda you make a very good point. With our riduculous higher by a long shot temps in the Southwest we better be ready for a power outage. I think I'd speed dial one of our favorite resort hotels and make a reservation if our went out. No way could be stay at the house with 115 temps or higher.

Watching the weather reports is amazing - some of you are suffering in the heat, while here I am wishing we could get backup in to the 70's. We did have about one week of 90's back at the beginning of June, but since then it's been cold, rainy, and windy. BRRR.

Hi Belinda - That's weird because late last week, we also had a 5 hr. power outage. No tv, no internet, no lights. We got a bottle of wine and sat out on the deck talking until bedtime - it was definitely different and fun, and we're going to do it again even if we have power. It's too easy to get distracted by the shiny bits.

Hey maybe you should just turn all the lights off and do it again!

Hi Belinda - I swore after hurricane Sandy in New York that I would not be without power so I got standby generator.  Funny thing,  that was 4 years ago and we have not lost power since.

Power is one thing we take for granted and often forget how much we do rely on it!  Glad things are up and running again.  Hope you get to see that episode of The Closer soon, Belinda!

Our power was all good last night, but mid-day today we lost power for a very short while.  Very unexpected, as no storms were predicted via the forecast.  Life's little surprises, to be sure Belinda Spillman ...

As far as "The Closer" goes ... I'm sure Brenda caught the bad guy and life is good!  We're fans too ...

Hi Belinda Spillman - I love your title.  You can go so many directions with it. But power outages is something that most of us can relate to.  We used to get them like clock work... At least 3 or 4 a year.  Something most people forget about, ... if you use a desktop computer is that your hard drive can crash.  I have mine on a battery back up that beeps so I can shut the computer down normally.
