I’ve learned many things throughout my real estate career. It’s hard to name just one thing that’s had the largest impact, so I’ve put together a list of 10 things I’ve learned while selling real estate that you may find interesting. I’ve learned:

1. The real estate market is constantly changing, so know the market. Your clients need your expertise to guide them. Be patient when patience is called for, and gently “nudge” them when necessary. My clients know I don't push, so please don't misread this as pushy. But there are times in a hot market when, if our buyers sit on the sidelines, they may miss out on a house Reading Glassesthey really want. If you educate your buyers and sellers and explain market conditions, you will be the advocate they need and want in their corner.

2. It’s always about the client. Focus on their wants and needs. If you keep the clients’ best interest at heart, success will follow.

3. The decision of which home to buy rests solely on the buyer’s shoulders. It isn’t what the Realtor thinks is best. It isn’t necessarily the home that offers the biggest value. IT IS THE HOUSE THAT TUGS ON THE HEARTSTRINGS OF THE BUYER.

4. There will be disappointment. As a Realtor, you will go over and beyond what is humanly possible and you will still experience betrayal and rejection, from clients, prospects, or others involved in the transaction. There will be tears and sleepless nights. Deal with it as soon as you can, and move on.

5. You can’t, nor should you, work with everyone. There will be personality conflicts, or some people you just don’t like (or that like YOU). That’s ok. Release them so they can find another Realtor who can offer them what you can’t, whatever that may be. Next!

6. There will be joy when you assist the first time buyer find that perfect home. It’s so gratifying when you know you’ve done your best and the client is happy.

7. There will be lifelong friendships. Some of my best “friends” are buyers and sellers I’ve assisted over the course of my real estate career. They are scattered across the globe, but through social media, we’ve stayed in touch.

8. There will be those who try to discourage or disparage you. Forget them. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring people who nurture and support you.

9. Play well with others. Real estate is a competitive business, but there is no need to be adversarial with the other Realtor when representing a buyer or seller. Realtors who behave professionally and keep the clients best interest at heart can come together during negotiations for the mutual benefit of all parties. There can be an exception to the rule, but for the most part, I enjoy networking with my Brandon MS Realtors. You learn who can and who can't be trusted.

10. You never stop learning. No two real estate transactions are alike, and it can be a fine dance going from contract to closing. Challenges arise that constantly keep us on our toes. But whether you are a real estate rookie, or like me, have 25 years plus in the business, each day offers new opportunities for growth.
