Hummingbirds At My Feeder (In Delaware County PA!)

Hummingbird Feeder Delaware County PAEarlier this year I was given a wonderful hummingbird feeder by a friend who remembered I enjoyed birds and that I expressed failure with attracting hummingbirds in the past to my yard.

I am very thankful for this feeder because it works! It is an attractive green glass feeder with four feeding holes surrounded by decorative flower petals and has a ridge on the base of the feeder that allows a bird to rest while it feeds. Unlike other feeders I have tried in the past, this feeder has a cup that can be added above the feeder that can be filled with water to prevent ants from climbing down the feeder and taking over, which was a big problem in the past.

My previous attempts to attract hummers to my yard always ended in frustration since ants would always find the sugar water and in no time the feeder would become infested with ants that climbed the pole and many drowned a sugary death in the sweetened water inside the feeder. And to be honest I rarely saw a bird :(

So now I am a happy camper and I am enjoying at least one sighting a day of a hummingbird at my feeder! It is very shy and bolts when it sees any movement from me or Doug. I can not be sure if it is just one bird or a few birds...I hope one day to get a photo! For now I am happy knowing I am actually feeding a hummingbird and not ants!!

(Thank you John!)

I hope you start to get more birds soon. Try to find out when the birds start coming around in the spring. I've heard they send out scouts that scan for the food sources. Maybe getting an early start in the spring will bring more birds later in the summer.

I sure enjoy watching them at my feeders.

Thanks for the advise Debbie Laity !  I heard there is a website that you can see the migration in the spring. Will have research that.

Sounds like you have a gang of hummingbirds!  Enjoy!

That's ingenious Gloria. I've always wanted to see if any would visit here. If it wasn't ants climbing down the feeder it'd be squirrels climbing up the post.

Hi, Gloria. I would love to have more hummers coming my way. We love to sit on the patio and watch them. They are most active in the early morning and evening. Last night we had at least seven of them all wanting to eat from two feeders. It was quite the show. That is about the most I ever get. I know people that live higher up in elevation, and they get so many of the hummingbirds that's its hard to believe. I think there is less food for them at the higher elevations.

Kevin J. May It is well worth the time to put a feeder out if you enjoy watching birds!  Thanks for stopping by.

Debbie Laity that sounds wonderful to have 7 at the feeder at one time!  They do not seem to be afraid of you which is nice.  And that makes sense about less food at higher elevations.

I have flowers that I was told hummers like...but I have yet to see one at the flowers as opposed to the feeder!!

Enjoy Debbie!

Hi, Gloria...I think the hummers will go for the easy feeder food, versus working to get it from a flower. That's just my observation, and maybe I've only been watching lazy hummingbirds.

If you have time check out this post I did. You might get a kick out of the second picture. I hope I don't offend you by posting a link here.

Keep up your efforts with your feeder. Make sure you change the food often. That is key. It goes bad in my feeders really quick in this hot weather. I just cleaned and changed out both of my feeders last night.

Hi Debbie, I think you have a good point about not having to work for food.  They are all probably lazy or know a good situation when they find it!

Thanks alot for the link to your post!  Any time.

Yes changing the water is important since the birds can get sick and not fly is what I heard.  I change it every 2-3 days, keep extra sugar water in fridge.

You may not know this but there is a bird group here at AR - here is link BIRDS

Happy Birding!!
