The following is a quote from an historic speech with current application.

"All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers. That's why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens. In the budget I will present to you, we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman [name redacted]. We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it."

I certainly agree with the sentiments expressed above.  Now we are getting somewhere.  I think Mr Trump would be well served to stand up for these positions in his speeches. However, Donald Trump did not originate the above quoted lines.  They are drawn (in a direct quote) from the January 1995 State of the Union Speech given by then President Bill Clinton.

Perhaps one of life's little ironies.  Perhaps just proof, once again, that God has a sense of humor.  But good policy, never the less.

That Clinton policy position is vastly different than the quotes by Trump. Just to clarify, it's not that the Dem's aren't in favor of strong border security - as a matter of fact it's probably at it's most secure in 50 years right now, due to a bi-partisan effort to improve it. Dem's just don't think it feasible, for a multitude of reasons, to build a 2000 mile long, 20 foot high wall. And they also understand that you are not going to "round-up" 11 million illegals (some of whom have lived here for decades - and their children) to deport them - it's just not going to happen. So how about we move past the half-backed bluster of Trump and tackle this problem like adults.

Here's Trump's quotes - just as a reminder.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. I suppose some of them are ok.”

“I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me — and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

“I do business with the Mexican people, but you have people coming through the border that are from all over. And they’re bad. They’re really bad. You have people coming in, and I’m not just saying Mexicans, I’m talking about people that are from all over that are killers and rapists and they’re coming into this country.”

“You’re going to have a deportation force, and you’re going to do it humanely and efficiently.”

I have a question about that last quote: are ALL Americans going to have to prove their citizenship to this 'deportation force,' or just the brown ones?

Karl - we will just have to disagree on this one. Trump's position is not well defined by the carefully chosen sound bytes that you offer.  He has, however, presented a more reasoned defense of his program. (https://assets.donaldjtrump.com/Immigration-Reform-Trump.pdf)

It  is my personal opinion that there should be some flexibility for otherwise law abiding undocumented residents without deportation - but their possible change to legal status for temporary work purposes should not be a path to citizenship.  Citizenship in the future should only be available to those who return to their own country to return by legal means.

Mike - Unless you want a ten page rant in response to your question, you might want to further define what you are looking for.

I support Donald Trump without reservation or apology.  He has been selected by our process as the nominee of my party in a long series of primaries by the rules of each state.  John McCain was not my choice - but I supported him for the same reason.

Beyond that - I think Trump may be the force for change that we need in the United States at this point in our history. He is a business man and it has been said that the business of America is business. If you go back a few blogs of mine, I answered Jon Zolsky's comment in a bit more detail about the half dozen or so real needs for our country which Trump seeks to address.

We have surrendered the high ground to the liberals in recent years and they have taken over the education process in this country until many of our children don't even understand concepts of liberty and capitalism.  Many younger voters supported Bernie Sanders this year - an unabashed socialist. It is time for a change and a return to the system of economics and government that made America the wonder of the world.

And finally - the alternative is Hillary. What have we done to deserve that.  As set out in a variety of books available (Armageddon, Clinton Cash, Partners in Crime to name a few) to the public, Mrs Clinton is simply not qualified by any measure for higher office.  I like the t-shirt that reads Clinton for Prison 2016. Make that a longer rant if you want me to include Hillary.

Thanks, Mike, for stopping by. I hope that answers your question.

I just want to respond to that last paragraph of your comment: Hillary Clinton must be the world's most intelligent criminal. Her political opponents have spent 100's of millions of dollars investigating her and I have yet to see ONE charge, much less an indictment. How DOES she do it?

Trump is uniformly unfit for office. Just last night, the Commander-in-Chief forum will be remembered as the time Trump offered more praise for Russian strongman Vladmir Putin than America's own military leadership, which he described as "embarrassing."

BTW, didn't we have a "businessman" running the country prior to the current president? At least that's what we're told.. a CEO. That didn't work out so well, now did it?

Back to immigration. It scares me a little when I hear Trump say that he will create a special branch of law enforcement to "humanly and efficiently" deal with the illegal immigrant problem. Deportation of 11 million people and a 2000 wall are the only policy positions he's been fairly consistent on... but neither will happen. And one of the reasons it won't happen (besides logistics) is that congress will never provide the funding.

Ted and Karl,

The indictment would have to come from the justice dept and we all know who they are taking care of. Karl I do agree that Hillary is the world's most intelligent criminal.

And, I do agree with Trump that Putin is more of a leader than Obama. At least Putin does not go around the world apologizing for our country. And Putin does not draw lines in the sand and dare the other guys not to cross it and then when they do hebacks down. Sign of a great leader? Nope!

Oh my Mike. Yes, Putin is a "strong leader" because he's a freaking dictator in everything but name. And if you are indicative of "conservative" thought and that's the type of "strong leader" you want for America, then God help us all.
