Fall Colors Are a Sign to Prepare For Winter in Colorado

One thing I love about living in Colorado is the fact that we actually have 4 seasons.  Summer is a distant memory and the crisp days of fall are in full swing.  We even had our first snow in elevations above 8,000 feet this past week.  So far, no white stuff down in the Mile High City.

We need to get ready for the freezing winter temperatures and blankets of fresh snow.  Here are a few tips to make sure your car is ready to hit the streets this winter.

Windshield Wipers -  This is a good time to change out your wiper blades.  Since the snow melts so fast on the Mile High street, you will have lots of splash back on your journeys.  You should also stock up on a few jugs of windshield wiper fluid.

Tire Pressure - As the temperatures drop so does your tire pressure.  If you haven't had you vehicle in to be serviced since the warm days of summer, your tires may drop to dangerously low levels over the winter months.

Emergency Kit - Here are some items you might want to carry in your car over the winter months.  Flashlight (with extra batteries), chains, snow brush and windshield scraper, warm gloves, blankets, flares, and a shovel.

Go through this checklist and make sure you are prepared for winter road travel in Colorado.  A few minutes of prep can save hours of stress.

Belinda- we were hoping to see some early fall colors on our recent road trip.  It's good advice to get your cars ready for the road!  When we moved to VA several years ago, we were told to make sure our cars had blankets, water, and flares.

I do love Fall but your reminders are great tips for getting ready for what's inevitable.... winter!  I carry a box in my trunk which includes all the things listed in your Emergency kit.    Have a great week-end.

Fall is definitely a reminder of what is to come, and to be prepared in a number of ways. These are some great tips for area residents, in case they aren't thinking ahead or are new to the area and perhaps not as familiar with this change of season!

Belinda I rememer those days of preparing for winter.....it was such a fun time of year. And especially when I lived in CO as ski season would be upon us soon and we'd all get our skies out and start waxing them!

Belinda, I just commented that our fall, while beautiful, seemed a bit muted this year.  And now with the rains hitting hard most of the leaves are being found on the ground quicker than usual.  Mark

Hi Belinda - Good tips. We just scheduled our sprinkler blow-out, and it looks like we'll be safe this year, although I manage to miss it about half the time and have to replace the little plastic valve that now costs $65. It was nice seeing snow on the mountains yesterday.

I started putting fall things out this morning.  Pumpkins a fall welcome flag, a fall leaf wreath, but it was 92 here today so it didn't feel much like fall.

It is good to be prepared for the winter months coming soon. I recently put a blanket in my car and need to add some of the other items you mentioned.

Fall is definitely here in West Virginia. The morning temps are in the 40s and during the day may go up to the 60=70s. Good tips to prepare for winter.

I hope that I never have to prepare for a Colorado winter, as I don't think I could handle it.  Well, maybe I could just stay inside by the fireplace, haha.
