Take your trash to the central Maui landfill for just $3

The Maui County Landfill just implemented a new fee to drop off your household trash, and it's only $3.  It used to be a free service, but I don't think this new fee is too steep. For now they need you to pay in cash, but by October 2017 they plan to accept credit and debit cards.  It's still free at the other locations: Hana (on Maui); Lanai Island; and Molokai Island.

This is kind of big news here, since it was a free service for almost forever.  For a short time a decade or more ago, they started charging $10 which resulted in lots of people just dumping their trash by the roadsides and in the cane fields.  The end result cost the County a lot of money to clean up and they waived the fees until this summer.  I guess they decided $3 is more affordable and every bit helps to cover the costs, since it's not cheap to run a landfill these days.  The remodeled facility is very well run and you just have to back up to a row of dumpsters and drop off your unwanted stuff.  No more driving up to the stinky mountain of trash and getting your shoes dirty!

Household curbside trash collection will cost you $324 per year, which is also subsidized.  You need to pay in advance and get billed twice a year.  In some locations you can pay extra and have them pick up your recyclables and green waste too, with the 3 Can Plan.  Learn more about Maui trash collection services here.

Look how easy and efficient it is!  At the landfill you can also drop off your green waste to be composted, and take in your recyclable items like flattened cardboard, glass containers, and recyclables.

Let's all do our part to keep Maui beautiful, and don't litter the roadsides and parks.

This is very interesting. As we become more and more a disposable country, landfills have to implement new policies. It's a shame that when they raised the fees to $10 people were dumping and causing the county to pay more money for the clean up!

Where my daughter lives (outside the USA) she pays by the pound how much trash she disposes of. Consequently, she's very green and thinks carefully before disposing items.

In my past, when I was a young boy, I remember everyone had to transport their trash to the dump. How things have changed. To just throw ones' trash anywhere is despicable behavior.

I represented a client that was trying to site a green waste to energy plant on Maui but was beat out by another company who tried to renegotiate their bid after they had won. Maui Lost in the long run!

I hate to see my favorite island continue to bury trash when it can be managed and recycled in so many ways.

Good morning George. Very neat and afforable enough. I live in a small town with no garbage pickup so we pay $35 a year for the use of the dump.

We compost and have very little trash each week, in fact our recycling bin is usually fuller than our trash can.

It seems like a very fair fee. Folks need to be paid who work at the location and maintain it.

$3.00 is still a very good deal for unloading at the dumps, Georgie.  I have no idea how much it is here in Sacramento; but it must be quite a bit more than that.

Having to pay per bag is common here in surrounding cities and towns. We don't pay anything for trash and recycling pick-up in my city. I'm sure we are paying through taxes....nothing is actually free!

Georgie, $3 is very reasonable, and wonder how many households to not have curbside pickup?
