Sanford is also a short drive from Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, and Fayetteville and provides an alternative for military families that want more of a small town atmosphere than Fayetteville offers.  Sanford is also conveniently located between Bragg and Raleigh, allowing one spouse to work on post while the other spouse works in Raleigh or Durham.

Sanford and Lee County provide many recreation opportunities.  One of the most popular is golf.  The area has 6 golf courses offering a range of different styles from public courses to private Robert Trent Jones courses at Carolina Trace to the world renowned Tobacco Road Course.  Sanford is also a short drive from the courses in Pinehurst which are among the most famous courses in the golfing world.

Central North Carolina has a mild 4 season climate that is not too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.  The area has beautiful rolling hills and streams. Sanford has several public parks and the county has San-Lee park which offers fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and camping.  Raven Rock State Park in neighboring Harnett County offers hiking, picnicking, canoing, and backpacking.  The Uwharrie National Forest is a short drive.  The Blue Ridge Mountains and the beach are both less than three hours away.

For history buffs, Lee County and the surrounding area are stepped in the history of the American revolution with local landmarks such as House in the Horseshoe, site of a scrimmage between Tories and Patriots.  House in the Horseshoe is a state historic site and features two historic encampments with period re-enactors each year.

Lee County is also home to Endor Iron Furnace which was used to refine metal for bullets during the civil war.  A community effort is underway to restore this furnace as part of a greenway park.

Lee County is home to the Temple Theater, which offers several professionally acted plays for the public each year.  Numerous retail outlets and restaurants, along with a new movie theater provide a surprising level of shopping and entertainment for a small town.
