I have so much to be grateful for but for me I would like to start with my cancer treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston. I had great Doctors and great support from my girlfriend who is now my wife. However, in this post I would like to give credit to the two young twenty somethings who were my radiation technicians. Cancer treatment is medieval torture and getting through the pain requires a lot of support and of course pain medication. The two young ladies were an absolute delight every time I came in that six weeks. They were always smiling upbeat and acted like I was the love of their life or maybe their favorite brother. The fact that they were African-American and only knew hip hope gave this guy who was 60 at the time in 2008 and loved R&B the desire to teach them about the history of soul from the 1940s through the 1960s. The place where I would be strapped into the machine had a CD player and I started with people like Big Joe Turner and Ruth Brown into Wilson Pickett and beyond and they loved it. When i came in they would say who are we listening to today? They took my mind and body to a different place and made it all bearable. I am using the picture where you ring the bell with them on either side. I miss them in a way and we cried just a little bit but they knew I was done and they made it better. I will never forget them and my gratitude knows no bounds. I think of them often.
Morning Joe.
One of these days, you need to go back and visit them. I'm sure they would be excited to see you and how well you are doing.

That is wonderful and I am sure they still think of you often too. I believe they probably started to explore more music because of your introductions to R & B.

Tbanks, Joe, for sharing your personal experience.
Best wishes for good health.
My treatment for hairy cell leukemia took just one week. A miracle treatment was available. That was in 2002 and I am still in remission.

Roy Kelley - I had no idea you went through that and of course it was before I joined ActiveRain. Nonetheless, I am thankful your treatment went well and that you are with us here now! You remind me miracles do exist! We should never take any day or person for granted. May you continue to stay in remission, living a long and healthy life with the love of your life, Dolores.
Joe- these wonderful caregivers in hospitals who somehow know exactly what you need and show so much compassion need to be celebrated! I agree with James Dray ...I bet they would love to see you.

Dear Joe Pryor - Though very scary, and a difficult time in your life, so much good came out of it too. Let me count the ways...
- Your girlfriend stayed by your side and you got married!
- You changed the lives of 2 technicians by introducing them to Motown music and its history!
- You made the best of a very difficult time and painful disease.
- You came out on the other side as a better man.
- You never gave up!
Joe, thank you for sharing your story. It was heartfelt. I started to cry but stopped myself short because I already knew you beat the odds and you have shared so many great new chapters of your life as a result of beating cancer. And one of the greatest gifts you gave to those 2 technicians is a positive attitude. These women did what they did on a daily basis. It was their job. They saw so many patients and their family members. Grief and suffering lingers. You gave them a mindshift and something to look forward to when you came in for your treatments. I think you helped save their lives too.
Thank God!

Hi Joe, didn't know you'd battled cancer. I'm grateful you won. It sounds as if you had a fabulous team of people around you to get through it. Using music as a conduit to healing and as an exchange of knowledge was genius.

From what I know of you, Joe, I could totally see you playing soul music for these nurses and sharing your knowledge and sense of humor to get through a troublesome time. Laughter and music are the best commodities, often under utilized.

Joe, Thank you for sharing this post about your experience. Compassionate technicians make all the difference during procedures as they surely did for you. I bet they think of you every time they hear an R&B song that touched a cord with them. So glad those treatments did the trick!

Joe Pryor - this really hits home with me. I love hearing stories about those who killed the cancer beast within them. Far too many do not. Here's to a life of health, happiness, and continued success.
You had some amazing caregivers - truly a blessing indeed.

Joe, Your post brought tears to my eyes. Those two wonderful people who helped you through that journey will be a part of your memory, and probably theirs, forever. Wishing you, your lovely wife and adorable dog continued good health and happiness.
Thank you for sharing your story. Having compassionate professionals at your side made a huge difference! And I love that you shared music with them!
Glad you made it. We do hear wonderful stories from people, who made it. Of course, we do not have stories from so many, who hadn't make it. Interesting, I did not even think of the music played while I was in radiation therapy. It was just a background noise to me. It is fascinating that you noticed. Wonderful post
