Eva Beatrice Dykes was born in Washington, D.C. back in 1893 to James and Martha. She attended M Street High School before continuing her education. She graduated summa cum laude from Howard University in 1914. After graduation, she was teaching at Walden University in Nashville, Tennessee. While there she received her second degree from Radcliffe College in 1917 and a Masters in 1918.

She continued to teach before returning to Radcliff, in 1929 where she was a member of the English Faculty. During her 15 years at Radcliff she won several teaching awards. In 1980, she was made Professor Emerita, she died in 1986, she was 93.

What you may not know about Eva is that she was the first African-American to fulfill the requirements for a doctoral degree, and the third to be awarded a PhD.
