Fort Myers Beach or Estero island Has a rich history which dates back to the Calusa Indians who were the descendants of the Paleo-Indians. Their capital was deeply rooted in Estero Bay and their empire went all the way from the Tampa area to the keys and they had even some authority over the East coast of Florida.
Mound Key on Estero island is believed to have been their capital and was build of pottery bones and shells and used as markers and burial grounds. These highly advanced and fierce warriors successfully fought the Spaniards during the XVI and XVII and XVIII century.
