How Lost (and Scared) I Felt!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sky Realty

After over 20 years as a pastor, I resigned my last church and moved into another career in real estate. Studying had always been a strong point of mine, so getting my license was a challenge that I was able to handle without too much difficulty. I remember walking out of the testing location with the news that I had passed the test!

What I remember best, though, after getting signed up with my first broker, were the overwhelming feelings and fears that I did know what to do to get started, and that I knew enough about real estate to be dangerous! My broker wanted to see my business plan. I did not know what a business plan was! One day the receptionist passed on a call to me from a woman who wanted to know about a certain area of Austin. By the time I found out where it was, the caller was gone! After three years in real estate, my knowledge of the Austin area and the real estate market has come a long way.

Through these years of learning this business, I have found other new agents who have the same fears that I had. I spoke with another one this week. They are given too little direction from those who can help them. Why? The agents are too busy and maybe too protective of their turf and knowledge to want to share their insights. The rarity is the agent who will encourage and mentor newer agents, answering their questions, giving advice, without asking for anything in return. I am blessed and thankful to have found one such man who will still answer my questions, though we are with different companies now. My current company president also offers much help, especially in sharing what he knows about using the internet to develop business.

As a PK, would love to offer any help or advice that you would like Jim.  My wife and I started our RE business in 2002 and have survived in it for six years.  Give me a call or email if we can help you in any way!

Jim, We had an AMAZING program for Rookies with my old company in Nashville. Bob Parks Realty. Each rookie was appointed a mentor, and we were paid through the company. (nominal, but). Each mentor enjoyed watching them blossom in to full blown Realtors.

Each Monday morning, the Rookies meet with the Broker.  They learn important things that you don't in school. This allows the Rookies to have more self confidence, which in turn, helps then succeed!   I think all offices should offer such training. They should remember "we are only as good as our Agents". It has worked for Bob Parks. He is continually in the top 100 companies nationwide. I miss my old office so much, but am moving forward since relocating here in Huntsville, Alabama.

Great post!

Jim,

I can relate to many of your fears when you started in this business, since I had no prior education/experience running a business.  I have 2 years in the business now & I am still learning so much about the business & what is the best way for me to successfully work this business & still balance being a wife, mom of 2 small kids & everything else life brings unexpectedly.  I also found that some of the agents who have been in much longer & are very successful don't want to share much about how they got there without something in return, but then I have also come across some agents who are willing to share a few tips & advice to help a newbie out.  I must say that since recently joining Active Rain - I have found alot of the info that agents are sharing here a blessing and I am sooo thankful that I finally joined.  God Bless you & your business Jim.
