After over 20 years as a pastor, I resigned my last church and moved into another career in real estate. Studying had always been a strong point of mine, so getting my license was a challenge that I was able to handle without too much difficulty. I remember walking out of the testing location with the news that I had passed the test!
What I remember best, though, after getting signed up with my first broker, were the overwhelming feelings and fears that I did know what to do to get started, and that I knew enough about real estate to be dangerous! My broker wanted to see my business plan. I did not know what a business plan was! One day the receptionist passed on a call to me from a woman who wanted to know about a certain area of Austin. By the time I found out where it was, the caller was gone! After three years in real estate, my knowledge of the Austin area and the real estate market has come a long way.
Through these years of learning this business, I have found other new agents who have the same fears that I had. I spoke with another one this week. They are given too little direction from those who can help them. Why? The agents are too busy and maybe too protective of their turf and knowledge to want to share their insights. The rarity is the agent who will encourage and mentor newer agents, answering their questions, giving advice, without asking for anything in return. I am blessed and thankful to have found one such man who will still answer my questions, though we are with different companies now. My current company president also offers much help, especially in sharing what he knows about using the internet to develop business.
