How much does being "certified" as a Home Stager mean to Realtors?

As a certified professional stager, I am going to be doing a presentation for some "new" realtors on the benefits of Home Staging.

I am finding that a lot of Realtors would rather work with a certified stager than one that is not.  I have been approached by several "Non-certified" stagers asking if I felt it was worth the time and money to get certified.  I believe it is but I thought I would ask Realtors the question and use the answers in my presentation.

thanks for your input,  Lisa Roy

Hi Lisa,

On the surface ceritifcation seems to indicate you meet some standards.  However, being ignorant and skeptical, I'm not really aware what "staging certification" entails or what benefits it provides me as the Realtor?  At this point, I would put more weight on a referral than the cerification status of a stager.

Vincent

Lisa,

an agent in my office said I should find out if my stager has INSURANCE. Would if all the things get stolen, or they fall and break their neck staging? Hmmm. does this coincide with being certified or is this another discussion?

I think it would be an extra feather in the cap that could help a Realtor®, but I think most Realtors ® just want to stick the basic suggestions and refer out the big projects when needed.

Vincent: Yes, there are some standards when becoming certified however it isn't difficult to take the course (at least in Canada)  I agree that referrals are still the best way to find a reputable stager. Being certified usually means becoming part of an organization which does hold some accountablity for members.

BethAnn: Not sure how it works in the States but in Canada, we cannot get bonded (insured for loss) unless we are employed by someone.  We can get liability insurance which protects the home owners' personal safety as well as the stagers.  This is something that EVERY stager should have prior to working.

Michael: There are a lot of tv shows and articles on home staging these days so it is easy to pass on good advice to clients but people are so busy these days with kids hockey, soccer, school events, social lives................it is a great option to have someone who knows what they are doing come in for a day and get it all done!

Anything that makes a home stand out is a good thing. Good professional stagers have a real eye for design and color coordination that enhance the home.
