The High Line: Manhattan's 21st Century Park

New York City released new renderings of The High Line. The High Line park is being built atop the former elevated train track transforming 22 blocks into an open park.

The High Line runs through three of Manhattans most dynamic neighborhoods, Hells Kitchen, West Chelsea and the Meat Packing District.

A sun deck with half an inch of running water is a feature of the new park.

The park's first phase, which runs from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, is set to open by the end of this year. The second phase, which runs from 20th Street and to 30th Street, is slated to open by the end of 2009.

The redevelopment of the abandoned elevated railroad structure has created a residential new construction boom on the far west side along the High Line and the Hudson river.

Hi Barbara,

I can't wait until it opens.  Check out "The High Line", a 6-minute documentary film, about The High Line, its history, the movement to save it, and designs for its reuse. Directed and produced by John Zieman.

Mitchell, what an interesting and innovative design for a new park.  Looks pretty amazing from the renderings.

This is a wonderful idea that is actually coming to fruition. I am glad that creativity and ingenuity were obviously put to use in developing this project. It is also impressive that the developers kept the functionality and beauty of the park and its users in mind.

Brian, Years ago my office used to look out at it and I had no idea what it was. Just a wilderness growing that covered the tracks. I think it will be a great park.

Rich, For many years the community wanted it torn down because it looked ugly from the street.  A group Friends of The high Line discovered the beauty of all the wild growth above the tracks. Because it was formerly rail tracks the city was able to get funds from the federal transportation bill.
