Strange, I took off work 9/11...then the kids came home early from school in a panic.

It was supposed to be just a day off for me. I just needed a day to catch up. A day for myself, the kids were back in school and I just wanted to get the house back in order.  I wanted to do the fall clean up, iron clothes, clean up the yard, prepare for fall, and basically wanted a day to myself...a day off from work.

Well, around 1:30 pm, my child, all of her friends arrived at my house frantic. I hadn't had the TV or radio on, I was enjoying the peace and quiet.

Once I knew what had happened and saw it on TV, we were in a different mode. I knew the person that owned the property where the brave took down the plane in PA.

Everyone was scared. As I always had large rolls of plastic to cover my huge garden, the kids started covering every window with plastic and duck tape, they called their parents and wouldn't leave the house until a parent was there to pick them up.  They were frantic, then again, Camp David where the Presidents summer home is, was only 15-20 minutes by fight (helicopter) from Gettysburg.  The mini-Pentagon isn't fair either, but we local's are sworn to secrecy to this site.

So, the kids stayed, the parents came and my house looked like a feature film for plastic wrap and duck tape. You could hardly get out of an orifice and you certainly weren't going to get in unless Ashley said so.

My home was always open to all my childrens friends b/c I was single and was almost always home.  My children's friends parents always would call me first to see where there children were. Yep they're here.  My daughter had an upstair's porch where they could all hang out and talk and have a good time. I loved it...

Well, yes, they did, they plastic covered her porch too...

Amazing how close I've become to all those children that alway's hung out at my house. They still call me to this day and tell me how well they are doing.  It also amazes me that my children never wanted to leave home to go to their friends homes, they were totally happy staying at home.  I guess I did something right...Its called OPEN COMMUNICATION...YOU talk to your children, they will trust you and will rather stay at home.

Ken,

It's Karen, but that's OK...we had fun.  Most of the kids were there with me until about 8 pm that night. We defrosted some turkey, we made stuffing, we cooked potatoes, we made salsa...anything that I could think of to keep them busy and not freaking out. TV was off music was on...

My whole family was home in California when it happened and it was so surreal. We were all home because a wildland fire had closed our area and I turned on the TV and I could not believe what I saw. Thank you for the blog.

My sister was a pilot for United and was literally in mid-air when this occurred. I was calling her every few minutes. When she landed she hadn't heard the news... only an instruction to land at the nearest airport. My heart goes out to the many people who lost loved ones... such a tragedy.

I had the morning news that morning getting ready to go into the office; I was on and was talking to a friend, I saw the 1st plane hit and just said "Oh my Dear God" and had her turn her TV on - The second plane hit and I knew that was not an accident, no one seemed to know what was happening; Family in Virgina, working in DC - I heard the Pentagon was hit, and the plane crash in Pennsylvania; I kept calling to check and make sure they were OK - It was a frightening, helpless feeling; one I am thankful we have not had repeated.

Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing on the morning of 9-11; The horrible, heart-breaking images still remain....

Karen, Yes, one will never forget what they were doing and where they were at that horrific moment. It was weird, I was going to Nursing school at that time and chose that day to play hookey. I never missed school, I had planned to go golfing until I was watching morning TV and saw what gutless, chickensh*t terrorists had planned for that day. I had a feeling of panic, helplessness and called my family back home in Seattle right away. (I was in Ohio). I will NEVER forget.

My sons will never remember 9/11 as they were not born.  My older son is very concerned about what goes on around him, and I can only imagine trying to explain it to him. How wonderful that you could be their for all of the children until their parents could be.

Karen- When the planes hit the towers I was in school. The principle came over the P.A. system and told everyone to drop what they were doing as the T.V.'s would be turning on and we were all to watch as it all unfolded, and wait for any further instruction. We stayed in school, and watched all the news coverage all day long.

Chuck,

Your sister was a pilot? Did she stop flying as a result of this?  Glad she was OK!

Lorena,

The scariest thing is, I took the day off just to work around the house and do fall cleanup.  I didn't have the radio on nor the TV.  I didn't find out until my youngest daughter arrived with about 15 friends who were afraid to go home alone. I lived less than a mile from the school and they were all in a panic.  No one left until their parents came to pick them up.  I called all of their parents and told them they were safe with me.  I decided the best thing to do was cook something and involve them all... We had a fantastic dinner...after they put plastic up at all of my windows with duck tape...

Surreal, it was unbelievable as I described my youngest daughter coming home from school with her friends.  I just happened to stay home from work that day...Unbelievable.

Christine,

Someone was watching over me that day.  My childrens friends always hung out at my house because I alway's talked to them honestly.  Some used to tell me, thank you Mama Monsour, I could have never asked my parents to explain anything to me...they are too busy for me.

Chris,

I amazes me that they kept you in school. Then again I lived in PA, close to the underground Pentagon, not far from the White House or the big Pentagon in DC.  A friend of mine owned the property that the other plane that was taken over by the people on the aircraft diverted in PA.

Everyone was in panic mode and I was in the middle of a strange triangle of destruction...it was horrific...for weeks.  And still is as I think about it today.
