Episode Two... The Saga Continues :-)

Hi All,

Well, as I am acutely aware, the launch of the Project Blogger contest is a mere 4 days away...96 hours...5,760 minutes...345,600 seconds... but who's counting?  Among other things, I have been agonizing on what to name my baby blog, Madison, Matthew, Jennifer and Jason all have their appeal but I think they might be a bit overused now, don't you?  Seriously, there is way more that goes into the creation of these things than I realized.

I know you may find this hard to believe, but until late last night I hadn't fully realized what I had gotten myself into.  I naively thought that my blogging would be conducted here on Active Rain alone.  If I had really thought about it I would have realized that there was no way that would work.  How can you optimize a site you don't own? Duh!  I had also not realized that there would be a financial investment as well.  Mind you, I am not complaining, but I am woefully unprepared.  The investment is not huge, actually from what I have learned during my research today, it should cost less than the postage alone would for one mailing to my 500 home farm.  Still, I had not budgeted for it, and one of the tenets of "The Millionaire Real Estate Agent" (written by Gary Keller and Dave Jenks, a wonderful book I highly recommend to everyone, regardless of which company you work for) and of Keller Williams Realty is "Lead with revenue".  So, I shall need to redistribute funds to ensure that I don't stray too far from the model.

As for the naming conundrum, not only does the name need to convey some information about what the site offers, it also has to "taste good" to the search engines and I need to like it.  I have considered everything from the truly esoteric like "Yello Bombazine" to the way too specific "The Site For People Who Want To Buy Or Sell A Home In Southern California Using A Realtor Named Tisza".  The former I think may be asking a bit too much of my future audience and the latter is, well, pretty dumb.  I mean, really, if someone were to ask that specific question they probably don't need to visit my Real Estate Marketing blog now do they?

I do have some ideas that I am toying with and I will happily announce the name as soon as I have purchased the domains and space.  Yes, I did say domains.  Another thing that I had not really thought about, but during my conversation with my coach Drew (who TOTALLY ROCKS! by the way) he pointed out that I need to own every permutation.  He shared with me that his company owns hundreds of versions of their domain name as extra insurance so that if you are looking for them, you will be able to find them.  It does mean, however, that the name selected will need to be bought as a .com, .net, .org... you get the idea.  If anyone is playing along with the contest, I would highly suggest that you do the same thing when you decide "whatcha' gonna call it".

I also need to start thinking about not only what I want to say, but why I want to say it.  I did go pick up a copy of the book "Realty Blogging" by Richard Nacht and Paul Chaney at my local Borders tonight (Ya gotta love 30% off coupons.  If you ever buy books or magazines and you aren't already a member of their Border's Rewards club, you really should be.  It costs nothing to join, kind of like the grocery store versions, and they send you coupons in your email several times a month, sweet.).

Anyone who thinks that I am entering this competition with some huge advantage should really think again.  Sure, the ability to string words together in, what I hope is a readable and entertaining fashion is very beneficial, that is not the only skill necessary here.  If it were, I would not be quite as worried (oh, I would still be worried, mind you, as I have read what some of the others have written and feel that we are all pretty evenly matched)because that is something I know I can do.  But this competition is not just about the content, it is about the whole package.  What goes on in front of the camera and what goes on behind.  Fortunately, I take direction pretty well and have always been a pick-the-ball-up-and-run-with-it kind of girl.  Actually, I am more of a decide-there-should-be-a-ball-but-I-don't-have-one-so-I-will-make-one-and-while-I-am-at-it-I-will-plant-the-grass-build-the-stadium-and-sell-the-hotdogs-too kind of girl.

One of the main things that has helped me keep from dissolving into a pool of jelly at the thought of how daunting the task ahead may well be, is how helpful, supportive and giving this community has been to me since the day I arrived.  From the first kind words posted on my very first ever blog, to the encouragement, suggestions and support shared with me and everyone else at the same time (ah, the beauty of the public forum), this has been a journey that I am so grateful to have undertaken.

I promise to share this adventure with everyone who wishes to come along.  I will share the triumphs and the travails so that we can all learn together.  Hopefully, by contest's end there should be way more than a dozen or so new and successful Real Estate Blogging sites, there should be thousand's.  Also, if anyone has questions about the process, or anything else for that matter, please feel free to ask.  Don't be shy, we're all friends here!

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Hi Ardell,

It's not the blogging that costs, its the site and the names.  The website I currently have is part of the Kellew Williams agent package but, to my knowledge does not have blogging capability.  Dustin also said that it should not cost much, if anything beyond the cost of the space to park it.  I don't have nor do I intend to try to sink cash into this project.  I am really excited about learning what can be done with the tools at hand.

Dustin also counseled the attendees to create a brand and to own that brand.  Since I see that he has done all right for himself with his little project, I am following his advice.  Believe me, if there was a way that I could effectively participate without spending a penny, I so would...any way to save a buck:-)

I hope you are bleeding Vegas dry and going to be able to drive your new classic car home with a trunk overflowing with winning$.

Take care,

Tisza

I have AOL. I get domain names free from that and soon they will have page space for my domain name. You should look into using AOL.

Tisza, I am relatively new to Active Rain and have been learning about blogging, the site, the bloggers, etc. and have read the blogs you have posted and personally I believe you have a real talent for writting interesting blogs.  I wish I had the talent to write as effectively as you do.  Just a thought but I believe Ardell was trying to tell you something by saying she never spent anything on blogging and she is quite successful.  Perhaps there are two way to think about it.  Anyway good luck I look forward to your future posts.

Hi - I am a Keller Williams agent too and one of the coaches.  I stated a blog almost 18 months ago and it is generating about 80% of my business.  There was no blogger book when I started.  the experts that saw my blog said it was all wrong because it has so many pictures on it.  You have a great coach.  Just keep in mind that the most important thing about your blog is YOU and your content.  Put a generous amount of you in it and start a conversation with your readers.  Good luck to you.  I have a feeling you will be just awesome!

Tisza, even if Keller Williams' site had blogging capabilities I would still advise against using it.  And that's just my humble opinion.  I see way too many agents using their corporate sites and tying themselves at the hip to the firm.  If anything ever goes sour or the grass looks greener elsewhere they have to start from scratch all over again.

I agree with Miriam.  You're a fabulous writer.  Can't wait for this show to hit the road!

You've got some sage advice from Teresa there =)

Hi All,

Thank you all for the support and advice.

Luke: It is nice to meet you!  I am also an AOL user myself and like it.  I already have my identity limit on the service maxed out, but thank you for the suggestion.  When they have blogging capability I will probably us them also. I have a lot to say :-)

Fran: I am also looking forward to reading my adventures as well.  I treat this kind of like a camcorder on vacation.  I turn my fingers on and let them run, then go back later to see where I've been and what I said :-)

Miriam: Welcome and thank you for your interest.  I agree that there is sage advice there from both Ardell and Teresa... really everyone.  I will of course continue to be a presence on Active Rain, now that I have found this I'm not going away anytime soon.  I may also start checking out other outlets as well, the challenge becomes time management.  Also, for this contest part of the judging criteria is the build (at least that's how I understand it).  And I might as well do the work now when I have access to such a wonderful resource like Drew Myers from Zillow.com and everyone else.  It is a whole lot easier to build a car then it is to reinvent the wheel, you know what I mean?

Teresa: Hi!  Teresa a big KW hug from Sunny SoCal!  I like pictures! I also understand, agree and believe that the most important ingredient I can put into this project is me.  My thoughts, style and essence.  That is true for everyone who uses this medium to communicate to the outside world.  After all, how many different ways can we find to say "curb appeal is important"?  It is, but "the exterior appearance of your edifice or dwelling plays a particularly large part in the decision making processes of the consumer" is a bit much, don't you think?  I am looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say and does throughout this process.  The learning opportunity for the participants and the audience alike is phenomenal!  That is why I wanted to play.  The chance to learn first hand from some of the best in the business is unsurpassed.  I wish all the contender's and their teams the best of luck.  By the time we the contest is over the blogosphere will be a better place for everyone!

Maggie: Thank you for the compliment, it is appreciated and very well received.  The concern you raised is a very valid one.  One of the other things that we are taught via Keller Williams is the importance of Personal Branding.  If someone else owns it, how personal can you make it?  It is really the difference between owning a home and renting a furnished room in someone else's.  Sure, both give you a place to lay your head at night and both can be comfortable and infused with your personality and style.  But, if you decide you want to tear down a wall, or pull the fabric off the couch which one will let you?  I also agree that I have been the recipient of sage advice.  The wonderful thing is that anyone following along can receive the same advice, from the same wonderful people at the same time I do.  What a wonderful thing!

Take care all, help lot's of people and have a wonderful day

Tisza...I agree...brand yourself, not KW...then you don't have to reinvent yourself and your marketing if you ever decide to change companies.  I'm also one of the apprentices...also with KW...good luck!  I will be blogging and vidcasting from Europe next week, so please check it out at RealEstateSizzle.com

Hi Jackie,

I already have, your site looks hot!  Blogging fits right in with the Keller Williams teachings about how to get and do business, don't you agree?  Have a wonderful time in Europe.  Eat lots of good things, drink lots of good things and share lots of good things!

Good luck to you and your team as well!

Tisza, I think you will have a big advantage with branding if you use your name. Your name is very unique and you will be number one in all searches very quickly. How about something stupid like: tiszasteasers.com, tiszastips.com or maybe just tisza.com. I have always branded my name and found it so much easier. GOOGLE broker bryant and you'll see. But what the heck do I know?
