Several local churches in Tate County, Mississippi are host sites for Angel Food Ministries.  Angel Food Ministries is based out of Monroe, Georgia.  It is a non-profit, non-denominational organization that helps people stretch their grocery-buying dollars.  Each month, Angel Food Ministries has a standard menu you can purchase for $30 (it may be more in other areas due to transportation costs).  This $30 box of food has a retail value of anywhere from $40-$70.  There are also several add-on options to the standard menu such as a Meat/Grill Box or Fresh Fruit/Veggie Box.

The standard box is supposed to be able to feed a family of 4 for 1 week.  My husband and I are empty-nesters and the food from last month's box (with items to supplement from the grocery store) lasted us for almost 3 weeks.  There are no minimum income limits, qualifications, or applications.  You just show up at the appointed order date/time and pay your $30 (no checks or credit cards) and then come back at the pickup date to get your food.

For those who are able to do so, a great idea would be to purchase a box to donate to your local food bank or church pantry.  There are lots of families struggling right now to make ends meet and this could mean the difference between going to bed hungry or having a nourishing meal.

In Tate County, the September box included:

four 6-oz. Sirloin Strip Steaks
2-lbs. boneless skinless chicken breast
3-lbs. breaded popcorn chicken
1.5-lbs. boneless pork filet
20-oz supreme pizza
1-lb. ground turkey
1-lb. cheddar cheese bratwurst sausage
1-lb. frozen green beans
1-lb. frozen brocolli & bell pepper
35-oz. frozen french fries
32-oz. Borden 2% shelf-stable milk
7.5-oz. box macaroni & cheese
15-oz. can pork & beans
7-oz. box chicken rice & vermicelli
1-lb dried pinto beans
one dozen medium eggs
one dessert item (it was a box of oatmeal cookies)
