Voluntary vs. Mandatory education

I recently taught a mandatory continuing education course, and quickly realized why they call it mandatory.

For the most part many attending knew if they sat there for 15 hours there would be not test and they would completed their education requirements now they pay their fees and they are good for another two years.

Many were puzzled when we talked about the Information About Brokerage Service.  Some of the commercial brokers argued that they could pay part of the commission to an unlicensed attorney.

Sometimes I think it is too easy to get and keep a license.

I couldn't agree with you more... as I read some contracts that cross my desks I have to wonder.. what were they thinking?

Hi Richard... Me too!  If you saw what comes in as offers on my short sale listings you would cry.  I actually speak to some agents who have no idea what an contract addendum is.  Caveat emptor!

Richard, I agree with you, we need to require more of our selves if the government and public are going to do the same.  I think more education should be required and that instructors who encounter students that clearly do not grasp the topics can put the student on probation on the spot and that very agent should be required to participate in the classes, not text & nap.

Gail, Steve, Jane,

Thanks for your comments.

I have allways found it strange that the students get to evaluate me?

As a RE agent for over 40 years, I am glad I learned early that there is CE for license renewal AND continuing education for my specialty of property management.  Fortunately, I can get my "manditory" license CE online and then take fun, interesting CE courses - I usually drive to Richmond - 1 hour way to a professional RE school after reviewing their courses online.  Being with agents in a different market helps and I always learn something I can use in my market.

Richard...I agree completely.  It is way to easy to become an agent.  AND IT SHOWS!!!
