Where Did This Huge Boulder Come From? - Mexico, Missouri

By
Real Estate Agent with St. Charles County, Missouri - Prudential Alliance Realtors

My husband & I went to my father-in-law's farm in Mexico, Missouri yesterday.  They own 160 acres of farm land and woods.

Most of the land looks like this:

Dad's Farm

Dad's Farm

Dad's Farm

Dad's Farm

But there is one place that this great big boulder lies.  It has been split in half.  No other boulders are around.  The neighbors call it: "the farm with the meteor".

We think it's pretty cool!  :)

So two questions Debi, is it a meteorite and did it being split in two come from falling? They probably can tell if it is a meteorite based on the mineral material in it which typically is nickel and iron. Sure is a big one!!

Gary - We don't think it was a meteor, because we think it would've made a deep crater.  We're thinking that maybe it dropped from a glacier many years ago...  We think that it split in 2 from the freezing and thawing of the creek passing through it.   Maybe.    :)
