Christmas morning and the silence.

There is that magic hour on Christmas morning, when the world goes silent.

Ever since I was a kid I noticed it.  Even when I was up before my parents, itching to tear in to that large box under the tree that I had no clue as to what it was.  There was always a moment or two...sometimes minutes, sometimes hours...where all was quiet.  I always respected that silence and even though I often broke down quickly and ran into my parents bedroom to force them out of bed so that I could play with my new toys, I always took a minute or two to enjoy the quiet and stare at the tree.  As an adult, I have become even more aware of it.  Right now, my wife is asleep and I just came inside from sitting in the crisp morning air with a cup of coffee.  My neighborhood is quiet.  Sure, there was the occasional dog bark, bird tweet, or squirrel jumping from tree to tree, but I didn't hear a human sound.  I didn't hear cars, TVs, radios, or even voices.  All is quiet.  Kids all over San Antonio are sitting by the tree and unwrapping their gifts, some are still asleep.  No matter what they're doing, they're not outside...yet.  Soon (by my estimates it usually starts around 10AM) a kid will ride down the street on his new bike.  A group of kids will gather to see someone play with their new remote controlled car in the driveway.  Whatever it is, they will begin to congregate in small groups outside their homes and play with the new toys.  Some will sit inside with their new video games, but they will holler with delight when they play with it.  Families will feel the effects of the morning coffee and start making preparations for their meal.  Pots will clang and showers will run.  Cars will start to head to the local convenience store to get the items that they forgot in the mad dash through the HEB last night (I was there twice).  Things will begin to happen.  But for now, its quiet.  After I hit send, I will refill my coffee and rejoin the silence on my deck out back.  I will soak it all in, itching to go wake my wife up to see what's in that box.  I will resist and enjoy the quiet.

Rebecca - The quiet drive on days like that are really amazing.  Despite my earlier "zombie" comments I do enjoy them.  Driving is one of my most concentrated times.  I can drive for days if you let me.  My mind wanders about thinking of all the things I need to sort out, do, deal with, wonder about.  I love it.  And Christmas carols in the car are always fun.

All good sentiment, but as you know when it is slow and quite that's when the real work should be getting done. Agents should be knee deep in planning the implementation of the business plans & marketing plans they should have created prior to the Holidays. All the work that is tough to get done when your busy with listings, buyers and closings, should be happening now.

If every agent in the US got back to the basics of selling and prospecting, we'd be lucky to have a quite period. As Steve Morris points out less than 6 percent of agents are getting it done because they are inhibited in some fashion.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May you have have a very EXITIZED New Year!

Matt:

Great post. I had to reflect on my childhood days on Long Island. Most Christmases there would be snow on the ground. The snow makes all sounds muffled and kind of "sound proofs" the whole world. Yes, I can hear the silence now......

Matt, when I was a late teen I worked in the Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.  I often closed one of the last rides to run at night.  So, as I was walking back to the employee parking lot I could walk through the park and there was nobody there.  The music was off... the lights were off (mostly).  And there were no people.  It was actually quite nice, but it was freaky in that Zombie Horde waiting behind the door kind of way...

Cat - I've had a few comments that mentioned how they could "visualize" it.  You know how happy that makes me?  So great to hear that a piece of writng actually triggered something in someone.  Glad you enjoyed it and hope you stop by again!

Exit Realty 1st Choice - You're definitely right.  I feel I've been busier in the past few weeks than ever before.  I'm laying the ground work for 2009 and can't wait to dive in.  I recently attended a 60 Minutes with Steve Morris and he was definitely a motivating factor for me.

Tina - I usually enjoy a bit of morning peacefulness, but I always find that Christmas morning is just a little bit different from every other day.  The quiet is quieter.

Mike - I couldn't believe it got featured and received so many responses.  I can imagine my office was pretty silent on Friday, maybe I should have went there for a bit more silence!

Richard - I try to find it where I can.  "Hustle and bustle" is great and I thrive on it, but once in awhile, I need to do "nothing."

Tami - I have no children, but I am the kid when it comes to Christmas.  The friend's we visited have two kids and they were up at 5:30AM.  Ouch.  Both of our friends looked so tired, but they had a great time and the kids were so much fun to watch.

Kristin - I know, can you believe it?  Who would have thought an innocent Tweet would turn into this.

Susan - I love that "sound proofing" you describe.  Being from PA, I know the exact sound (or lack thereof) that you're talking about.  I always loved that.  I don't miss cold, but I do miss that part of a good snowstorm.

Lane - Which ride did you close down?  The Loch Ness Monster was the first roller coaster I ever rode on.  I can imagine being in a place like that with absolute quiet would be an interesting experience.  When we played festivals, I loved when we got there in the early hours.  Taking a walk through the festival grounds before anyone else was there in the early morning hours and then hours later looking out at 20,000 or more kids having a great tme...it gave me a cool perspective on it.

My favorite silent time is Christmas Eve after everyone else has gone to bed, I have filled the stockings and tidied up for the morning festivities.  I like to just sit in the glow of the Christmas tree, while the whole world is silent and asleep.  Those are the most peaceful moments of the year.

Janna - Christmas Eve often has that same feel to it, especially if there's kids involved.  I used to spend Christmas Eve at my brother's and help him assemble the toys and take them all of of hiding for my two nephews and my niece.  When we were done, we'd usually celebrate not waking the kids up with a beer, sitting in the silence, waiting for the madness that would ensue in the morning.

Matt, I spent most of my time on the Skyride, and we would run until the park was empty.  I worked at all of the stations at one point or another... as well as all of the roller coasters, the race cars... I narrated on the train, shot season's pass photos.  I did a LOT of jobs in operations... and one in Live E.  I worked Threadneedle Fair for a while, too.  All of it in two summers.

Lane - I always wanted a job at an amusement park when I was younger.  It was kind of the fantasy job of the summer.  Of course, Dorney Park wasn't really in walking distance to my home and I didn't have a car, so I was stuck with more mundane things like laser printer cartridge refilling, 7-11 clerk, expert wing maker, and frozen pizza maker.

For me it was working at a roller skating rink (actually a couple of them, doing everything from skate rental to DJ).  It was within walking distance and I did have a car...  I did the amusement park thing for a couple summers and it was a seriously fun job.  And a LOT of work.  We used to have contests to see who could get 100 hour weeks.  It wasn't that bad.

Lane - 100 hours?  Yikes, I thought the occasional 90 hour work week was rough.  I did do four months of straight 80 hours work weeks, that was pretty rough, but I loved the paycheck.

I only hit the magic 100 a couple of times in two summers.  But it was almost like playing sometimes.  Basically it was like being there from open to close for 7 days.  Throw in the employee parties, and it made for a long week.  I also had a 45 minute commute.

The checks were good.  I had one for 195 hours in two weeks.  Of course, looking back the money sucked... but at the time it rocked.

Lane - My wife and I always discuss how when we were young and making minimum pay for horrible jobs, we still had money to go out with friends all the time, never cooked a meal, and always had disposable income.  Then we grew up, got real jobs and suddenly there never seems to be enough.  Weird how that works out.
