Freezing, Flooding & Eff this!

As I drove home last night and experienced one of the many traffic hang ups I thought to myself this global warming is definitely here. I love the next snowfall like many people but I do think that our city needs to become better equipped to handle these winters.  In a city where actual neighborhoods are called blank hill we need to prepare better for them.  I myself was home bound for days during the winter.

That being said I thought I would help to prepare people for these upcoming months of gloom and doom.

What flooding?  You are kidding me, you mean that it has been raining non stop, the rivers are rising and anyone is shocked? What has the city done to prepare for this?  Winter after winter we have displaced home owners, business shutting down and lives lost due to flooding.  When you buy real estate ask your real estate agent am I in a flood zone?  While that home down by the river may sound like a fabulous summer retreat in the winter it can be a dangerous place where your family and belongings are at risk.  Remember that scene in Cape Fear with the house crashing into the rocks? Old saying "if it seems to good to be true it probably is" Do your homework before you buy.

What can you do to prepare your home for the winter?

Open cabinet doors on exterior walls to allow heat to circulate throughout, wrap your pipes, disconnect garden hoses.  Have candles on hand, remember if the power goes out you do not have heat.  Having a friend or family member's home that you can crash at is a good idea too.

Elevate your water heater, furnace and electrical panel to minimize damages, have an emergency plan and make sure everyone knows it.

Using sand bags consult the website for proper use

Remember pets cannot weather the cold either so while I do not recommend getting a pink juicy outfit for your dog, a warm coat is a good idea for those short haired canines.

You really have to wonder what's wrong with the city officials that, year after year, they seem totally unprepared and caught off-guard for the weather.  Here in NE Ohio, we get tons of snow, usually beginning in early November and lasting at least until March.  Yet each year, the snow falls and we have to wonder when the salt trucks will be out.  I've lived here for 11 years and it's been the same every year.  Makes me want to smack somebody.

This is a great preparedness list, though!
