What do you see - obstacle or opportunity?

By

Henry Ford said "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."

So what obstacles do you see in front of you today?  The market?  The massive changes in the mortgage industry?  Have these things made you lose sight of your goals?

Successful professionals set goals on a regular basis, but setting goals is much more than just thinking or dreaming about the future.  It's about planning.  It's about strategy.  It's about perseverance.  But mostly it's about DOING.  I hear a lot of Realtors these days complaining about a lot of things.  And yes, let's be honest - the market sucks right now.  But think of it this way... you know all those Realtors who got into the business a couple years ago because it was "fast and easy" money?  Well, they're dropping like flies right now, and we're the ones who'll be left after the shake out.  The serious.  The dedicated.  The planners.  The DOERS.

So what are you doing on a daily basis?  Making those phone calls?  Sending those hand-written notes?  Previewing the inventory?  Knocking on the doors of FSBO's?  Or are you nursing a cup of coffee and complaining to an office mate, wasting valuable time that could be better spent building your business.

I'm rambling a little bit at this point, but my encouragement to you is to hang in there.  Keep focused on your goals.  Spend this time getting back to the basics: PLAN and DO.  Keep your eyes on the goal, and don't let these obstacles - as insurmountable as they may seem - cloud your vision.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail...

There is no easy money in this real estate market, that's for sure!  I won't let this market take me down, I love real estate way too much for that.

Blog, blog, blog.  It's the most cost effective form of advertising available to Realtors and real estate professionals.  I've kicked up my blogging quite a few notches in the last few months!  It seems to be working!

I think that optimism is contagious -- no matter what market we're in.   Setting goals and being consistent have been so helpful to me in the last few years.

I watched a Brian Buffinni tape the other day that really got me thinking. He talked about writing down the top ten people you spend the most time with and make sure that out of those ten ---that you are not hanging around negative people. He qouted his mother saying " Show me your friends and I'll tell you what kind of person you are." He's right. I've been one of those negative people but I decided my worst enemy was staring me in the face every day. It was me. I needed to change my attitude. I needed to look at the glass half full again because I was the one clients looked on to bring them my take on the market. So I changed my way of thinking. I stopped watching the news and reading the paper on anything negative with the market. I started thinking positive and started reading positive things. He also made another qoute "Garbage in, garbage out.... so I started reading books on various topics but mostly motivational. The result--- I'm still working on it but 2 signed contracts Monday and two offers written and turned in today. Not bad!!! I'm not bragging, but hopefully my story will help someone else. I have had my head sunk in the sand too long and I'm ready for some sunshine!!!!!!!!!!!!

Attitude is one of the most important things to develop for our businesses.  It's a lot harder when things are tough, but there's opportunity in any economic environment.  A great attitude will give us the focus and flexibility we need to seize it.

 Pam, thanks for the reminder.

Successful professionals set goals on a regular basis, but setting goals is much more than just thinking or dreaming about the future.  It's about planning.  It's about strategy.  It's about perseverance.  But mostly it's about DOING.

Setting goals: check

planning: need some help here.

strategizing: need some help here.

perseverance: check

doing: I know that it is better to be doing something that is consistent with the planning and strategy. Although, sometimes just throwing pies at the wall works, so I'm told. Something is bound to stick. But, I've got limited resources (time, if not money), so how do I focus on doing constructive, effective activities? need some help here.

Pam,

I REALLY like this quote, "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal".

I believe this to be true.  Stay focused, stay in motion, and the rest will work itself out.

Pam, The thing that helps me the most is I suround myself with people that are drivers. They push me and cut me off if I start to go down the poor me path. Most of them don't even work in this industry so it is easier for them to get me back on track.

Thanks Pam.  Your blog post basically distills what I heard a successful broker say to a crowd of 200 or so agents on the other end of the country (Seattle, WA).   - Things we focus on tend to get bigger.  The choice is ours.  What will I focus on today?

Thanks so much for all the comments!  I was pleasantly surprised to see such a reaction to my ramblings but am so glad I'm not the only one striving to maintain a positive attitude amongst all the negativity we are facing.

Regina - that is the challenge sometimes, isn't it?  The trick is making it work FOR us and not AGAINST us!
