united states: President's day

When I was a kid we celebrated George Washington's Birthday and Abraham Lincoln's birthday. These must have been the only two presidents who had birthdays! It was sort of great because we would have 2 days off and Valentine's day in the short month of February! On leap years we would always joke about people born on February 29. Somewhere in my young adulthood they squashed the two birthdays together and called it President's day. They added Martin Luther King day (or in Idaho Human Rights Day) in January so it was fair. I never met the woman but yesterday I had an email from a good friend whose sister died. I called to comfort my friend.... The story that was relayed boils my blood.... Some of the story will be my interpretation of events. Sis was dealt an unfortunate hand... In her late teens she was diagnosed with schizophrenia...She made poor choices and ended up on the streets.... Later she sought help and was put on disability... Disability comes with medicare...Sis improved and moved in with her elderly father....They took care of each other...Sis obtained part time work and proudly went off disability...With … (7 comments)
