winter: Just Another Day... - 04/04/24 06:43 AM
...in New England.
Here we are on April 4th, 2024. Easter has come and gone but the Spring has not sprung. We're all asking where that #%@^ (Darn) rodent is...lol? As you can see, we had a plowable mixture of rain/snow/sleet overnight. It's 9:30 a.m. as I write this and the wind is really howling with 40-50 mph winds. Interestingly, some of the coastal communities are reporting rain & wind only. The Georgetown, MA area is on the rain/snow line

Here's what the ocean along Plum Island is doing (Live Cam)
Have a great day. I'm venturing out for a meeting

winter: Are you Prepared... - 01/23/24 10:49 AM
...For Winter Driving?
I found this graphic below that the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) made available. It is a wise driver that has an emergency kit in their vehicle. I can remember the days we used to carry tire chains for stormy winter driving.
This is a great graphic to include in your winter listing packets as well as providing a copy for your family and friends. Hey, it's dangerous out there so Be Careful and Be Safe

winter: Winter Blast - 02/06/23 09:05 AM
What a strange Winter we've been having in Massachusetts. It's 6 February and we've had 7" of snow in the northeast section of Massachusetts. We've had several inches of rain and the temperatures have been moderate for wintertime. Mostly in the 30s and 40s.
Friday night into Saturday a Polar Blast swept through. Frigid temperatures and high winds. I went out to my vehicle at midnight 21 to start the car up. It was -9 degrees F and at 5:00 a.m. it was -15 degrees F. With the wind chill, we were down to -35 to -40 degrees F.
We prepared as well … (15 comments)

winter: Gooblers Knob Results - 02/02/23 07:50 AM
2 February 2023
Today at Gooblers Knob in Punxsutawney, PA a large crowd gathered for the annual Groundhog Day Festival awaiting the appearance of the infamous Punxsutawney Phil prognosticator of the duration of Winter. This year His Honor saw his shadow and declared there will be 6 more weeks of Winter.
Phil does have one detractor, his former wife
Someday, Pam & I will make the trip to PA and take in the festivity at Gooblers Knob. However, today we are readying ourselves for an Artic Blast. With wind chill factors the prediction is -40 F more or less. Then on Sunday, the weather … (8 comments)

winter: Do You Need To... - 11/02/22 08:31 AM
Sell Your House Before the Holidays?
As you look ahead to the winter season, you’re likely making plans and thinking about what you want to achieve before the year ends. One of those key decision points could be whether or not you want to move this year. If the location or size of your current home no longer meets your needs, finding a house that better suits your lifestyle may be a top priority for you. But with today’s cooling housing market, is it really a good time to sell your house, or should you wait?
If you’re ready to make … (6 comments)

winter: The Longest Night - 12/21/20 09:01 AM
Here we are December 21st, 2020. In the Northern Hemisphere, today is the Winter Solstice. It began at 5:02 a.m. The is day is known, simultaneously, as the shortest day and longest night of the year. BUT, hope arrives tomorrow when we add about 1-minute of daylight each day until the Summer Solstice arrives in June when we have the longest day and the shortest night.
Enjoy the blessings of the day for tomorrow is not a guarantee

winter: Winter is Coming and It's Time... - 10/07/20 09:30 AM

The cooler weather of Fall is a signal to begin the process of preparing your home for the cold winter months.
What should you be doing to prepare? So glad you asked. These are not in any particular order.
1. Tune up your heating system - Your technician will ensure the system is working efficiently AND will check to make sure there is no carbon monoxide leakage into your space
2. Reverse your ceiling fans - I hadn't really thought about this, but, by running your ceiling fan in a clockwise direction (if you can) it will push the heated air down into the … (8 comments)

winter: There's Still Time... - 11/14/19 06:16 AM
...to get your home ready for Winter!
I came across an article on the Bob Vila Blog, written by Lyna Bort Caruso, that provides a Winter preparedness checklist. Seems like a lot to do BUT your home is your castle and we don't want a drafty castle or unkempt yard, do we? There's still time even though many of us have already had our 1st or 2nd cold snap. Click the link below for the article.

winter: YESTERDAY... - 10/25/19 02:48 PM

No, it's not the Beatles song but just as good, in my eyes!
Yesterday was our appointment for an energy audit of our home with the organization known as MASS SAVE. The energy companies in Massachusetts got together and formed MASS SAVE as a way to help Massachusetts real estate owners save on energy costs.

Good News! You're allowed to reuse the service (every 3rd year)
The first time they came to the house we had a full-blown energy audit.
While they were here they sealed everywhere checked windows, fireplace, blower door test, put insulating pads behind all the electric … (13 comments)

winter: National Search... - 03/06/19 07:10 AM
As I sit here nursing a sidelining head cold I became aware of the national search for the nefarious Puxatony Phil...alledged prognosticator of Spring weather. Early signs of Spring came and went. One of my neighbors said they saw a small flock of Robin Red-Breast birds. But since then I came across this wanted poster. Be careful, he's furry and cute but will lie to your face.

winter: How Many Phils Are There? - 02/03/19 11:03 AM
Of course, there's only 1 Puxatawney Phil BUT what I didn't know was how many States have their own version of Pennsylvania's Puxatawney Phil. Here's a map. AND I found a couple others not listed.

In alphabetical order: "Note" Yes, I found 2 in Wisconsin
Alabama - Smith Lake Jake - 6 more weeks of Winter
Connecticut - Chuckles IX - An early Spring
Georgia - General Beauregard Lee - 6 more weeks of Winter

winter: Protect Your Home From the Extreme Cold - 01/29/19 10:31 AM
January 29, 2019   With Winter now officially here, it is important to button up your house to prevent cold infiltration. We've already had mustache freezing cold. Wind Chills have been way below Zero. A polar vortex is descending on the Midwest as we speak. Stay safe and stay warm   I share this article from HomeLogic Many parts of the U.S. have been struck with a snap of subzero temperatures. While keeping themselves warm during the bitter cold, homeowners also need to take precautions to keep their home safe, too.
In Wisconsin's capital, the Madison Water Utility posted a photo on … (16 comments)

winter: The Winter Boots... - 02/02/17 04:27 PM
Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on his boots?

He asked for help and she could see why.

Even with her pulling, and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on.

By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat.

She almost cried when the little boy said:

'Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.'

She looked, and sure enough, they were.

Unfortunately, it wasn't any easier pulling the boots off, than it was putting them on.

She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots … (12 comments)

winter: What We Should Do In Winter.. - 12/08/16 05:27 AM
I am happy to share this article I received this from the Veterans Administration about the importance of staying active during the winter season. We all know it's way too easy to become inactive during the winter months. I'll be looking forward to the opening of our town's new Senior Center later this month. They offer yoga, a walking club, low impact aerobics & there is talk of offering Tai Chi.

winter: It's Official - 03/15/15 11:20 PM
This winter in New England has hit record territory. Yesterday on the Ides of March we had more snow, enough to break the record, as measured in Boston, 108.6" of the white stuff with the majority of it falling in the month of February (Note: there was no snow on the ground as of January 20th). Further north of Boston to the Ipswich/Newburyport area, where we are located, we had 120". THAT'S 10 feet! Over 900 roofs in Massachusetts collapsed from the sheer weight of the stuff.

I've always wondered how the colonists were able to survive. Here's … (11 comments)
