The two presenters this year were Eric Belsky, Managing Director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University and James Wood, director of the University of Utah’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. While Mr. Wood's remarks were pointedly local, Mr. Belsky's report covered the state of the housing market nationally, with concluding remarks to show where Utah stacks up among the states.
The expectations? Cautiously and realistically optimistic. Realistically meaning that while there were no bold statements of certain recovery, the outlook is that things are … (0 comments)

growth: Best Cities to Weather a Recession? Salt Lake City Among the Top 10 - 11/26/08 10:14 AM
According to a recent BizJournals story on MSN.com, Salt Lake City "would appear to be well situated to confront the recessionary challenges ahead."
The report looks at areas of the country that have undergone rapid growth in the past 10-20 years and are continuing to expand. It asserted population growth as a positive factor in a strong local economy in bad times, and Salt Lake appears to be doing well in that department as well.
The outlook for areas that are undergoing expansion is good because as population grows, infrastructure is needed to support the additional people, and the entire local economy benefits from that … (5 comments)

growth: Salt Lake Population Growth (and some other areas in Utah) - 03/28/08 06:03 PM

Although the article speaks mostly about Saint George (an area I don't service, but do send referrals to) it also mentions Salt Lake and some of the surrounding counties which I do cover:
"The Provo-Orem metro area, which ranks eighth nationally in growth since 2000, ranks 34th in its one-year growth of 2.6 percent. And the Ogden-Clearfield metro area ranked 26th with 2.9 percent growth.
Utah's … (0 comments)
