Living in the shadow of the nation's capital it is not at all uncommon for people to think we all rush into Washington, DC on the Fourth of July to watch the fireworks. To paraphrase the Gershwin classic, "It ain't necessarily so - that to DC all of us go." There are many local celebrations throughout Northern Virginia. woodbridge things to do: Rippon Lodge, It's Legends Live In Prince William County History - 06/28/11 12:59 AM

Rippon Lodge is thought to be the oldest colonial home in Prince William County. It certainly is among the oldest in Northern Virginia.
It was built about 1747 by Richard Black-burn of Ripon, an old cathedral town in England. Colonel Thomas Blackburn, his son, was a contemporary and fought with George Washington. In that period the families of Mount Vernon and Rippon were on very intimate terms. George Washington even made reference in his diary to overnight stays at Rippon Lodge with Mrs. Washington
Its' ownership changed over the years, but was last owned by Admiral Richard Blackburn Black, another descendant … (16 comments)

woodbridge things to do: Golf Comes In Two Sizes In Lake Ridge, Woodbridge VA - 05/19/11 03:15 AM
Small and Large
One of the unique advantages of living in Lake Ridge is that Prince William County very thoughtfully built a park and marina within the subdivision.
As you can see they even added miniature golf for people at my level of expertise. The Lake Ridge golf course is one of four public courses in the county.

Since not everyone in Lake Ridge is a golfer, children and adults can enjoy one or all of our five swimming pools and a Sprayground for little Lake Ridgers.

There is more good news about Lake Ridge Lake Ridge is one of the ten largest subdivisions … (12 comments)

woodbridge things to do: Enjoy Patriotic Music At Hylton Performing Arts Center On Saturday May 14, 2011 - 05/03/11 01:45 PM

As we approach the tenth anniversary of the massacre of 3,000 Americans at the destruction of the World Trade Center, damage and loss of life at the Pentagon and the "Let's Roll" heroes at Shanksville PA who prevented a larger catastrophe at either the Capitol or White House the Manassas Chorale will be in concert at the Hylton Performing Arts Center located on the George Mason University Prince William County campus.
To me, one of the highlights will be that selected vocally talented Prince William County elementary school students will sing with the chorale on several selections. Also, the chorale will … (16 comments)

woodbridge things to do: You Can Sleep IN History In Prince William County - 02/28/11 04:30 AM

Of all the programs that Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented shortly after he assumed the presidency in 1933 the two that left a great physical legacy were the Works Progress Adminiatration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Both agencies had the goal of putting a large number of unemployed to work on community infrastructure projects. The CCC recruited young men 17 to 25 years of age.
In Prince William County they were assigned the task of building Camp Chopawamsic (now Prince William Forest Park) to provide both recreational and educational opportunities for poor inner city children. Prince William Forest Park has … (16 comments)

woodbridge things to do: It Is Possible To Mistake An Osprey For An Eagle - I Have - 02/08/11 10:29 AM

Last Spring I was taking photos of the Occoquan and Belmont Bay areas and decided to drive into the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. I came upon an Osprey's nest (not that unusual along the shoreline of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers), but this one was different. There was a chick in the nest which can be seen just peeking out from under the female. Although the parents were quiet, they kept a watchful eye on me. However, the chick was doing a little bird, "Cheep,Cheep,Cheep". I kept my distance so as not to disturb them. Finally, the chick … (18 comments)

woodbridge things to do: What A Wecome Sight On A Sunny Sunday In February - 02/06/11 06:37 AM

All across much of America we have had more winter than many of us bargained for except kids who enjoyed sledding instead of studying. When we went to church this morning it was a sunny and balmy 45°.Our church has a new building about 5 years old with a line of young cherry trees between the parking lot and church building. I was surprised and pleased to have it confirmed that the National Capital Area's famous cherry trees will be in full bloom again this year.Tourists gravitate to the Tidal Basin in DC for their view. woodbridge things to do: Is Santa Really Coming To Woodbridge VA On A Train? - 11/28/10 02:54 AM
Everybody knows that Santa makes his rounds with his sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer on Christmas Eve. What most people don't know is that Santa has been in love with trains for a very long time. He's making a special visit to Woodbridge on a train.
Why do you think the Marines chose a train as the logo for the Toys For Tots campaign?
Also, take a look at the mechanical train he left my father in 1922 - almost 90 years ago.

Santa and Mrs Claus will arrive in Woodbridge VA aboard the Prancer Express on Saturday December 11, 2010.

One of the advantages of living in Lake Ridge is that the subdivision sits along the shore of the 2,100 acre Occoquan Reservoir. Lake Ridge is the only subdivision with a Prince William County Park and Marina enabling you to do everything you would do in any lake except swimYou can launch your own power boat or rent kayaks, canoes, jon boats with motor or paddle boats.
