knoxville tn: Living history in a local Knoxville cemetary - 09/30/07 06:44 PM
I've always been a fascinated student of history and how things once were.
By studying the past, especially an area's past, we learn how things came to be the way they are today and where they might be going in the future.
An annual tour of Knoxville's Old Gray Cemetery, a 13 acre, private cemetery that lies just north of downtown, offers a great window into the past of Knoxville and glimpses into Knoxville's colorful history and now departed citizens.
Reenactors portraying local figures tell fascinating stories throughout the cemetery accompanied by horse-drawn carriage rides. Today was a beautiful fall day in east Tennessee; … (7 comments)

knoxville tn: Is there no good news anywhere? - 09/26/07 06:04 AM
Inman news headlines today:
"California home sales drop 28% in August"
"Resale single-family median home prices fell in 11 of 20 regions in California while sales dropped 27.8 percent in August compared to the same month last year, the California Association of Realtors trade group reported this week."
 "Home purchases decline last week"
"Applications for home-purchase loans dropped significantly last week as long-term interest rates climbed higher, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported today."
Do you think someone interested in maybe buying a house would see this as a bad sign? ;-)
Granted times are tough in some areas. Fortunately they are certainly not tough in all … (3 comments)

knoxville tn: Walking/biking the Knoxville greenway system - 09/05/07 03:07 AM
One of the many pleasant things that add to the quality of life in Knoxville/Knox County is our ever growing greenway system of paved pathways for bikes and walking traffic.
Currently there are over 40 miles of these delightful trails throughout the city and county with more being added as funding permits.
One of my favorite sections is the Third Creek Greenway which runs from the Bearden area along the north end of Sequoyah Hills, through Tyson Park, along Third Creek, through the University of Tennessee Agricultural Campus, and along Neyland Drive and the Tennessee River to Calhoun's Restaurant below the Gay … (6 comments)

knoxville tn: It's time for "Boomsday" in Knoxville, Tennessee! - 08/29/07 09:37 AM
Labor Day weekends around the Knoxville area are also time for our annual "Boomsday" celebration.
Boomsday is a huge street fair with recent attendance exceeding 300,000 happy party goers according to Knoxville Police estimates.
Some of last year's Boomsday party goers strolling along Neyland Drive and the Tennessee River.
Boomsday starts this Sunday, September 2nd at noon and goes until around 10:00 PM after the spectacular fireworks show which is billed as the largest Labor Day fireworks display in the US.
This Labor Day is the 20th annual Boomsday for Knoxville.
In addition to the largest Labor Day fireworks show in the nation, this year's … (5 comments)

knoxville tn: Photo blogging the Grainger County Tomato Festival - 07/28/07 12:52 PM
About 30 miles east of Knoxville is the pleasant little town of Rutledge located in Grainger County Tennessee.
As all the local folks know in east Tennessee, Grainger County is to tomatoes what Vidalia, Georgia is to onions. Grainger County is, hands down the tomato capital of Tennessee.
To celebrate this luscious vegetable (or fruit if you prefer) the local folks hold an annual event called not surprisingly "The Grainger County Tomato Festival"
This weekend my lovely bride and I drove up to Rutledge to check it out. It was overcast and drizzly but that didn't seem to dampen the crowds; I estimate … (7 comments)

knoxville tn: Farragut Tennessee, one of the 25 best affordable suburbs in the south - 06/20/07 01:22 AM
In a May article in Business Week Magazine, Farragut Tennessee was named one of the "25 Best Affordable Suburbs in the South".
"Farragut, Tenn. 37922
Metro: KnoxvilleNearest city with pop. 50,000-plus: Knoxville (17 miles) Median Home Price: $224,900 Cost of Living Index: 102.9Primary School Test Score Index: 131*Violent Crime Index: 34Percent pop. with commute <30 min.: 68%"
The nearby University of Tennessee adds to Farragut & Knoxville's quality of life. Here the UT Pride of the Southland marching band leads the way to a Saturday afternoon football game at Neyland Stadium.
Knoxville and nearby Farragut always rate high in "best places to live" surveys because...............well, … (1 comments)

knoxville tn: Cool spot in Knoxville for some hot tunes - 06/11/07 09:36 AM
Deep in west Knox County lies 500 acre Concord Park, a local outdoor mecca with picnic shelters, volleyball, swimming, junior golf, 8 mile biking trail, skatepark, soccer fields, baseball & softball fields, fishing piers, a marina, and a yacht club.
And a cool spot called "The Cove" where on the second Saturday evening of each month the Knox County Parks & Recreation Department hosts a free outdoor concert series under the lakeside forest.
My wife and attended the first one this past Saturday and listened to some great rhythm & blues tunes from a group called "The MacDaddies".
A great evening as usual … (3 comments)

knoxville tn: Whimsical - 06/10/07 08:34 AM

So you're driving along this quiet, country lane and all of a sudden you pass a cute little white frame house with a funny eared dragon's head sticking through the roof smiling at you.
Whoa....................it's 11 AM, I haven't had anything to drink since that glass of Chianti Friday night......I'm not asleep I don't think, so what the heck is going on here.
I turned around and went back.........sure enough the funny eared dragon is still there along with this guy

and a whole menagerie of whimsical characters.
It seems David the owner has a great sense of humor and creates these characters and … (59 comments)

knoxville tn: Cool website and videos of the Knoxville, Tennessee area - 04/19/07 10:26 AM
The Knoxville Area Association of REALTORS® has been working on a huge portal website recently titled View Homes.com to display all of our listings with lots of user friendly features such as maps with a "rubber band" search of listings, links to area information, and my favorite, about 70 clips of area information, things to so, local figures, sports, lakes, and tons of other stuff.
Member can put this neutral link  into their personal or company website which also links to all the clips or you can choose your favorite and post them individually.
Here's a sample of the individual sites; the … (0 comments)

knoxville tn: Best place to find a new home in Knoxville, Tennessee - 01/09/07 12:57 PM
Let me shamelessly suggest www.KnoxvilleMLS.com, my flagship website developed, improved, remodeled, tweaked, and positioned over the past 9 years.
When I stated building this site I wanted it to be the best it could be (and who doesn't) so I was always asking people that were using it what could I do to make it better, faster, easier, and more user friendly.
Today's version is the result of listening to those comments and advice.
At www.KnoxvilleMLS.com you can:
View all of the Greater Knoxville area's Realtor listings from the Knoxville Area Association of Realtors.Get a daily update of new listings that meet your … (2 comments)

knoxville tn: Association project - 10/01/06 04:23 AM
My Association's Board of Directors is working on a member website project that should be ready to roll out live soon.
Essentially it's a portal with all of our listings, great search features for consumers, area census information, and several other cool features.
The purpose of this site is to take back control of our listings and use them to benefit our membership; the people that put the listings there in the first place.
As soon as it's up and running I'll give you the URL and you can take it for a test drive.
One of the very cool parts of it is … (1 comments)
