north fork: How To Find Long Island REO/Foreclosures - 03/04/12 03:44 AM
My brother called yesterday, and is moving back east, from Alabama to New Jersey.  Because he’s aware that we list bank owned properties, he had a simple question:  HOW DO I FIND THE FORECLOSURES in New Jersey without paying a fee to a website?
While I’m not familiar with the MLS in New Jersey, the Multiple Listing System of Long Island (MLSLI) is the source for listed bank owned properties on Long Island- asset companies and banks require that all listings be entered into the local MLS by the Realtor assigned the asset.
Unfortunately, there is not a tab that offers … (4 comments)

north fork: An Afternoon at Raphael's Vineyard in Peconic - 06/10/09 03:57 PM
We have a friend who happens to be, along with his band partner, an excellent musician, performing as the Earthtones on the North fork/East end of Long Island.
Armed with this information, we decided to visit one of the local vineyards on a Sunday afternoon, just to see what the  Earthtones experience was about.
Weekends offer several "live music" signs in front of the numerous vineyards; we have a musical preference, and had been told that theEarthtones might fit the bill. For those seeking out an afternoon sipping wine and listening to live music, you won't be disappointed. We aren't wine … (9 comments)

north fork: On the East End, the North Fork of Long Island. A Dog-Gone Find. - 01/08/09 02:40 AM
Authored by: Laurie Mindnich January 8th, 2009
Our bulldog, Oliver, became VERY ATTACHED to a very specific dog toy. It was an amazing toy: a rubber ball attached to a string.
IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT, WHEN IT FINALLY (after seven months) EXPIRED, locating the same toy would be a search…resulting in a REAL FIND!
After looking through several stores known for having dog toys, and realizing that a generic variety, rather than the REAL DEAL, would last no more than a few days with our somewhat…exuberant family member, it occurred to me to try a NEW place on the North Fork of … (7 comments)

north fork: General Wayne Inn in Southold on the North Fork - 10/19/08 02:05 PM
Authored by: Laurie Mindnich
October 19th, 2008
When we first moved to Southold, New York in 2002, there was a structure in our neighborhood called the General Wayne Inn.
Situated oddly, Sean’s father explained that he had in fact dined at this opulent eatery located in the residential area of Bayview- it was a destination spot often navigated on foot, as those in the area were able to combine a nice walk with a fine meal.
The building was abandoned when we viewed it, but still intact- clearly devastated by a fire of some sort, it was destined to deteriorate without immediate … (22 comments)

north fork: Pumpkin Search on the North Fork of Long Island - 09/05/08 07:12 AM
Authored by: Laurie Mindnich September 5th, 2008
As reluctant as many of us are to let go of summer months on the North fork of Long Island, fall brings activities that offer fun that appeal to any age level.
Not initially believing in the challenge of the corn maze (it’s tough to imagine that our corn season is coming to an end already…), last season, we took it upon ourselves to indulge the kids in the family by visiting the Harbes Family Farm.
I still laugh out loud when the memory is revisited- and going again this year with or without … (15 comments)

north fork: Looking To Buy a Retirement Condo on the North Fork of Long Island? Go Jump in a Lake! - 08/07/08 06:18 AM
Authored by: Laurie MindnichAugust 7th, 2008 category: Buyers
OK, not literally jump in a lake, but perhaps a toe dip in the community pool.
The decision to leave a long term family home is tough enough; the notion of “starting fresh” often adds stress to those seeking a retirement condominium. Often termed “active adult” and “55-plus” communities, the premise is to offer a home surrounded with people of like-age and life stage for those no longer in need of a larger home.
There are any number of opportunities on the North Fork of Long Island, from Riverhead to East Marion.

north fork: Monthly Blast From the Past…North Fork, Long Island - 08/04/08 07:07 AM
Authored by: Laurie MindnichAugust 4th, 2008

I read with interest the following article, published by The New York Times on June 18, 1989.
The author was Barbara Klaus. Link to the article below.
The Talk of the North Fork; Past Riverhead, Suburbia Looms Ever Closer
"At the Hargrave Vineyard here, Abigail Bakker is packaging newly bottled wine. As on other weekdays on Long Island's North Fork, it's quiet. The grapes are swelling on the vines and the roads are all but empty. Now in her 20's, she remembers how it was when she moved here as a child."

north fork: SHOPPING ON THE NORTH FORK OF LONG ISLAND - 12/16/07 07:07 AM
Authored by: Laurie MindnichDecember 16th, 2007
With just a few weeks to do holiday shopping, the motivation kicked in, and I headed to the Tanger Outlet in Riverhead, New York. The home of such fabulous outlet stores such as Coach, Ralph Lauren, J Crew, Ann Taylor, and a host of others, it seemed the logical gift-giving locale.
For some items, it worked. For other more unique items, however, I found myself delighted with the Greenport, New York opportunities.
Greenport, having experienced its own magical rejuvenation, offers gifts that TALK. I don’t mean whisper- I mean figuratively reach out and scream, … (2 comments)

north fork: Why Retire on the North Fork of Long Island? - 09/09/07 09:56 AM
September 9th, 2007  A question was posed to me recently about the benefits and/or motivation involved for individuals that choose to locate a retirement / second home on the North Fork of Long Island.
For those individuals approaching their fifties, thoughts about where to “be” when the kids are gone is one that niggles- ideas about personal freedom and lower taxes notwithstanding, a very important factor is a “family friendly” location.

Being close, yet…a vacation away. For those of you that live mid-island, or in close proximity to the city, your transition from family home to ease of 55-plus living … (18 comments)

north fork: A Riverhead, New York Festival Kicks Off A Saturday - 08/22/07 12:57 PM
Authored by: Laurie Mindnich August 22nd, 2007
When people visit our east end of Long Island, whether to consider moving here, or simply for a summer getaway, the offerings are abundant every weekend. This Saturday, we decided to visit the Riverhead Polish Fair. It occurs every year in Polish Town, Riverhead, New York, and it sounded like a fun adventure. Parking at Riverhead High School, we made our way through the festival, noticing the green lawns of charming homes that are offered in this unique area- while small, their reminder of another period in time is very enticing. The lot … (13 comments)

north fork: Saturday morning in Southold, New York… - 08/10/07 08:48 AM
Authored by: Laurie Mindnich August 10th, 2007
A sunny Saturday morning in Southold, New York is a day that I relish. While weekdays are often packed with things to do in the North Fork of Long Island, Saturday for me is special in the summer.
This Saturday, the North Fork was full of tag sales. It’s in the Yard Salers Corner section of the Suffolk Times newspaper, right after the real estate section. In the summer, there are two full columns of enticement, and this Saturday was no different.

Some people in the North Fork take these tag … (3 comments)

north fork: North Fork Long Island Sellers: Try Home Staging! - 06/24/07 09:54 AM
Authored by: Options Realty -Laurie Mindnich June 24th, 2007
While most of you may be aware of the term “staging”, many people aren’t fully aware of the process. We recently had the pleasure of a staging experience with ValAllocco, Owner- STAGED 2 SELL NY. She clarified it for us, and for our sellers. We’d like to share the info that we learned at this meeting.

STAGING IS NOT EXPENSIVE. The staging consultation that we experienced was $200.00. For this, Val will come to your home and walks, room to room, making suggestions. This is done with the advice from her … (4 comments)
