haiku maui hawaii: Here piggy piggy, time to go to market... in my freezer! - 06/14/15 09:45 AM
Here piggy piggy, time to go to market... in my freezer!
Back in the old days, pig hunting meant strapping on the back pack and heading out to the forest at the crack of dawn to spend all morning trudging through the woods chasing after those elusive pigs.  Pig dogs would lead the way and chase the quarry to the farthest possible corner of an impossible gulch, and you'd have to catch up and confront the snarling snapping yapping scene before the dogs got ripped up.  If all went well, the dogs would still be alive and unhurt, and the pig would … (17 comments)

Silent Saturday - DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Taken in Haiku Maui Hawaii - bright evening sky with a little creative tweaking.
Have a great weekend, and don't forget about that pesky daylight saving time event.
Here in Hawaii we don't turn observe this practice and no need to turn the clock back.

haiku maui hawaii: Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect it - from the garden! - 10/01/10 02:35 PM

Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect it - from the garden!
Take a look at these beautiful big tomatoes!
We don't usually get so lucky with growing big tomatoes and most of the time we are happy to have sweet cherry tomatoes from our Haiku Maui garden.  The last time we tilled up this patch of ground there were some volunteer tomato plants, and we said - let's give them a chance and see what happens.
Fast forward to now.  Those 4 plants produced abundant cherry tomatoes and large tomatoes - from seeds that had been ploughed up into the soil, by … (7 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Haiku Maui HI - Twin Falls Farm Stand - the movie! - 09/12/10 04:20 PM
Haiku Maui HI - Twin Falls Farm Stand - the movie!
Not long ago I posted some pictures of this famous Maui north shore roadside attraction... now here's the 1 minute movie!
The Twin Falls Farm Stand is a popular spot on a sunny day, with so many cars pulled over by the side of the Hana Highway it can get dangerous.  People come for the waterfalls, which can be reached from the easy hiking trails.  They stay for the wonderful concoctions they whip up at the fruit stand, such as banana smoothies, and sugar cane juice.  Grab a cold drink and … (5 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Photo Fridays - more eye-popping tropical blooms in Haiku Maui Hawaii - 02/05/10 05:15 AM
TROPICAL FLOWERS FROM HAWAII
Remember the jade vines from Haiku Maui?  While I was there I took some more flower pictures.  It seems that people can't get enough of these tropical blooms, so I will share some more with you.  It's very easy to grow these plants in the warm climate of Haiku Maui.  With rainfall somewhere between 25-75 inches a year, and plenty of sunshine, Haiku encourages many plants to flower year round.  The brilliant colors of Hibiscus, Bird of Paradise, Croton, and Cotton are all shown here.  Palms of all kinds thrive in Haiku.  Citrus and avocado too.
What kind … (28 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Happy 98th Birthday Rubak - Here's your dancing girls! - 10/29/08 12:43 PM

Last weekend we attended a birthday party for a friend in Haiku Maui - he's now 98 years young.  In addition to celebrating his birthday, he was also celebrating his 1 year wedding anniversary and the opening of his art gallery.  He makes some colorful oil paintings of Maui scenes, which you can see hanging outside his studio here.  We should all be so lucky to have a long rich life.
These beautiful dancers are from Palau, a small island nation in the Pacific.  They have such warm smiling faces, and they were so graceful, I just had to post these … (17 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Haiku Ho'olaulea 2008 - Flower Festival and Bazaar in Haiku Maui HI - Pictures - 03/10/08 12:24 PM

Last week I mentioned this upcoming event in Haiku Maui Hawaii ... the annual Flower Festival....
Haiku Ho'olaulea 2008 - was a resounding success this past weekend.  This year the weather cooperated and it was the most beautiful sunny day you could imagine on Maui - so you know it was GREAT!  I think the past few years the rain kind of dampened spirits somewhat, but not this year.
We actually were up and at the fair just in time to catch the opening blessing, and the booths and vendors were just putting the finishing touches on their displays.  We brought our visitors, … (19 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Back to Nature - Twin Falls Maui - a tropical excursion in Haiku - 01/29/08 01:38 PM
(This is my contribution to the Back to Nature contest that Christina Williams came up with.  I don't expect it to be an entry that will compete with the others, but wanted to participate for the points!  Good luck to all the other entries!)
Twin Falls Maui
One Sunday my 86 year old dad said to me..."I want to go up to that Twin Falls place and go for a walk, how far is it up to the falls?"  I thought about it for a minute and imagined him up there slipping in some mud and falling, with nobody around to help him … (12 comments)

haiku maui hawaii: Remember Clotheslines? - 10/02/07 09:22 AM
You know what bugs me?  So many subdivisions don't allow clotheslines according to their CC&R's.  When did clotheslines go out of fashion, and why?  What's up with that?
I remember reading somewhere that if everyone in this country just hung up their laundry to dry, we wouldn't need nuclear power plants, as the amount of energy consumed by electric dryers equalled the output of our nuclear power plants.  I'm sure it's not that simple, but we obviously could cut back a LOT by hanging up the clothes.  Save power, save money, save the planet.
Sure that's easy for me to say, … (30 comments)
