christmas: The Holidays Approach! - 11/15/13 04:03 AM

Just a quick walk down Main Street says that the Holidays are certainly on their way!
The merchants are in full celebration mode!  Some have already put up festive colorful decor.  Some are marking sale items brightly and boldly.
The creativity abounds!
The bead shop has colorful glass baubles hanging on various lengths of bright ribbons.  Many shops have added twinkly lights and fake snow.  Soon each and every shop will have some semblance of cheer.
Our favorite of the day featured this holiday weasel.  He absolutely screamed greetings as we walked briskly toward lunch opportunities.  You can visit … (3 comments)

christmas: Comfort kit for carolers - 12/23/12 05:53 AM

It is no secret that Starbucks has perfected marketing of their beverages. The forty years of progressively clever and tasty products has been fun to watch.  The evolution continues to prove there is a lot of creativity in addition to business ability involved in the steady market share owned by this coffee giant. As we stopped through today for a holiday treat, peppermint mocha latte, we noticed the addition of a new product being offered for Christmas. What a delightful thought to have carolers coming by and being prepared to treat them with a warm beverage!  That would help them retain their … (9 comments)

christmas: Home for the Holidays - 12/23/12 04:40 AM
Courtesy of our usually faithful vehicle, we will be home for the holidays. As we finished our last appointment late yesterday afternoon we swooped through the grocery to pick up the last ingredients for our Christmas Eve family feast. When we started the car to go home, the vehicle made some unsettling sounds and engaged in not so good vibrations.  The service engine soon light was also on... (Ralph suspects the Oxygen Sensor)We drove a few blocks out of our way to find that our favorite mechanic was closed.  It is the holidays so we should not be surprised.  The timing is not … (0 comments)

christmas: A Winning Weekend in Tomball Texas for Christmas 2012 - 12/06/12 12:12 PM

As you look about for what's to do and where's to go this weekend, there is a winning destination if you are anywhere near Houston.

Tomball Texas is just up the road from downtown and offers cultural education this weekend.

Settlers to Tomball in the mid 1800's were diverse.  Among them were a large number of German immigrants.

Many of the original merchants were also of German descent .  Many were farmers and with the rich soils and gently rolling terrain, it proved to be a profitable decision to settle there.

christmas: Marvelous Montgomery Texas for Christmas 2012 - 12/06/12 11:38 AM

If you have not treated yourself to a visit to Marvelous Montgomery Texas, this weekend would be a great time to correct that deficiency!

This place will make you feel that the Victorian era has come back for a visit.  In addition to a parade and walking tour of Victorian homes, there will be a series of events you can participate in.

Be assured that the merchants will give you a warm welcome, and it should be a fun day of filling all the gift needs on your list.  From hand made gifts to a … (3 comments)

christmas: Prestonwood Forest Christmas Light preview - 12/03/12 02:13 PM
For years when our children were small, one of the highlights of the Christmas Season was a drive through Prestonwood Forest.

It is a small 40 year old subdivision right off Cypresswood and S.H. 249 right here in Northwest Houston.

All the streets have themes which were probably assigned in the first year.  In those days it was a requirement that homeowners decorate their homes.

Now it is not required, but many residents do the decorations as their gift to the community.  It is truly a labor of love!

The kick off, "night of lights " … (14 comments)

christmas: Santa Clause is coming to town...... Nov 10, 2012 - 11/07/12 12:36 PM
There is a cool breeze in our area and the Woodlands Mall will be hosting a visit from none other than Santa Claus this Saturday November 10th.

We will be seeking an opportunity to borrow a grandchild for the day so we will have an excuse to attend this yearly event.

There has not been any press available on the exact time Santa will arrive.  My guess is that you can plan to be there in the mid afternoon and be assured that you will be able to sneak a peak at this holiday icon.

No doubt there … (5 comments)

christmas: Beginning to look a lot like Christmas - 10/19/12 12:11 PM

Christmas?  No!  Can't be!  It is still October! We first saw emerging displays at Cosco a few weeks ago.  Then while doing a quick run through a pottery store we saw that almost ALL the aisles were filled with trees and ornaments.Really?  If the average consumer were to purchase just a few of the offerings seen, they would need an annex for their decor! Also if we all started putting up lights and yard art now and continued until Dec 1....    It would then take til April to take it all down.We believe in the magical feeling of Christmas decor.  We … (9 comments)

christmas: Time Warp... - 09/09/12 12:04 PM
It is early September.  One would think there might be a break in the brutal heat we have endured since March!

There is no change in the weather but this area seldom has Fall!

When we went to Costco to do the weekly grocery run I was somewhat surprised to see Christmas decor being displayed.

It seems that the season gets moved up yearly.  Perhaps the people who just leave their lights up all year are right.

Decorating for holidays has always been fun and festive.  Bringing out the boxes brings back family memories from … (0 comments)

christmas: Ever drive around in a car that resembles an egg yolk? We have..... - 12/25/11 11:52 AM

When we planned our trip to right outside D.C., getting from the airport to our destination required the renting of a car.  Economy was the order of the day due to the expense of the plane fares.

Illustration... The safety yellow vehicle that turned out to be the only economy car on the Thrifty lot when we arrived for the pick up.

Since we were too tired to walk and too cheap to upgrade we took it.  The reasoning was that it would get us from point A to point B (airpor to mom's house) .  It was … (5 comments)

christmas: Time Accelerates around Christmas! - 12/20/11 11:02 AM
It seems that every year time accelerates dramatically the closer we get to Christmas.
I am not sure if it is because we try to squeeze too many activities into the  allotted hours, or if the days being shorter crowd out reality...
Whatever the cause the phenomena exists and adds to the stress factor.  That is, if we allow it to.
The longer we live,  the more I am convinced that the choices we make about how we spend our time, and who we spend it with determine the who we become.  Chose wisely... Enjoy your time and do not commit … (2 comments)

christmas: Merry Christmas to all from us! - 12/10/11 12:00 PM
A great stress reliever would be NOT putting things off until the last minute.  Procrastination has been one oft least favorite character traits all my life!Today is the deadline for getting our Christmas lights set up for this Christmas Season.  We started yesterday and literally ran out of daylight before we could get the task complete.Appointments in addition to an unexpected computer glitch requiring a trip to the genius bar at the Apple store have successfully robbed us of the morning and early afternoon. We still need to get a timer and some more yard supplies so time is becoming an issue. How … (4 comments)

christmas: Do you have your Christmas Decor up yet out in the yard? - 12/09/11 01:24 PM

We live in a subdivision that was once  known as the "Christmas subdivision. "  In days gone by,  the HOA required that the residents decorate the exterior of their homes. This event was a highlight of the Christmas Season  for many Houston residents. The traffic was horrid, but the over all effect seemed to achieve a peaceful sparkling escape for all for a couple of weeks each year since the early 1970s.Times have changed.   The participation is no longer required, but is still widely popular for residents and light gazers as well.Tomorrow night will be the first night of this seasons … (4 comments)

christmas: Tis the Season..... - 12/02/11 10:31 AM
We just passed a sign outside an upscale subdivision that reads:  Happy Holidays.  For some reason the fact that the reason for the "Season " is so often denied or just overlooked in our increasingly politically correct world, is becoming annoying. It seems that I remember that our forefathers structured the founding of our country upon Christian values. What is more Christian or valuable than the freedom to worship the reason for this "Season."On the other hand,  if you do not exercise that freedom because of a lack of belief... You do not have any basis for Happy Holidays.   In fact, you really … (2 comments)

christmas: Dress Rehearsal Last Night - 12/02/11 02:59 AM
Well..... Last night was the dress rehearsal for the Annual Christmas Program at First Baptist Church in Conroe (no I'm not Baptist..... just singing in the program).   Guy Penrod from the Gaither Vocal Band is the featured performer.  Its sure fun to sing with a group this large with an Orchestra....(the Orchestra is a first for me!)  Tickets are still available for Saturday night and Sunday night for only $10.00 per person.
You hear people like Guy on the TV shows but you really can't appreciate the talent until you're up close and personal.  If you're anywhere near North … (1 comments)
