Paris Haute Couture Meets Vancouver Home Staging
When I was in Paris recently... one of my favourite past times was keeping a keen eye out for the latest in clothing fashion.  Whether through observing well dressed Parisians rushing off to work in their 4" stilettos on cobbled streets, or getting a glimpse of the latest scarf or purse as it rushed by, it was evident that Paris Haute Couture is alive and well, and living in Paris!
This window display in a clothing store in Paris certainly caught my eye.  I love the combination of the colour red with the leopard … (28 comments)

Home Staging Vancouver Causes Reenactment of the 7 Years War
Like a scene out of the movie, Night at the Museum, I may have unintentionally caused a second chapter to the 7 Years War, the infamous war between the English and the French during the mid-18th century.  Let me back up and explain...

I was called in to add a bit of "wow" to an already gorgeous home for sale.  This home was built in 1998, but you'd swear it was built 100 years ago.  The builder really focused on recreating a period home, with beautiful wood moldings and paneling.  … (21 comments)

What's Yellow and Black & White All Over? - Home Staging Vancouver - Before & After Photos
My company, Exit Stage Right, Vancouver Home Staging, had the pleasure of staging another condo in this new-build apartment tower.  This unit is pretty small, so making the space look spacious and yet have multi functions was paramount.  The demographic for the building is very mixed.  There are older buyers who are gravitating towards the more expensive units and penthouses, and then there are the younger crowd, just getting in the market, who are happy with a smaller, less expensive unit.
For this condo, … (26 comments)

property styling: North Vancouver Home Staging - Lower Lonsdale "Before & After" Photos - 09/05/11 03:18 PM

North Vancouver Home Staging - Lower Lonsdale "Before & After" Photos My Vancouver Home Staging Company, Exit Stage Right, was very happy to stage this vacant townhouse, located on Lower Lonsdale in North Vancouver.  The location for the townhouse is fantastic, situated only one block from the Lonsdale Quay Market, and a quick Sea Bus ride away from downtown Vancouver.  Everything is within walking distance. The townhouse itself looked pretty stark, bare, and uninviting with no furniture, colour or life to the property.  The beige walls and empty, cavernous space was not very appealing to a young, urban professional or … (37 comments)

Sometimes It's the Small Picture that Helps Sell a Home - Home Staging Vancouver, B.C.

We're often concerned with the "big picture" when staging homes.  Sorting out furniture that needs to be brought in, or rearranging existing furniture is extremely important.  The big picture concerns itself with where art should be placed, adding area rugs and dressing the sofas with coordinating cushions.  Once the big picture is complete, the rooms usually look very nice.  However, you can't just stop at the big picture.  Staging is all about layers, and another layer would be to now focus on the … (18 comments)

It Aint All Glamour, Ya Know! - Home Staging in Vancouver, B.C.
When we first get into the business of Home Staging, we have images of flitting around a property, wearing designer clothing, and gently placing a vase here, and an orchid there.  Our nails are all finely manicured and painted the latest soft pink.  We gently brush back a rogue hair away from our brow, as we contemplate the placement of our vase and move and rearrange said item until we are perfectly satisfied, before moving on to the next "objet".
Then reality strikes us like Dorothy's house crashing down, … (62 comments)

Home Staging Vancouver, B.C. - AN EXPLOSION OF MELLOW, YELLOW SOFAS!
Is there a full yellow moon out lately?  I can't quite explain it, but recently we've been faced with staging several properties, all with yellow sofas.  Yellow!  The sofas have actually been in very good shape; it's just that they are very yellow, rather than a nice, neutral cream or beige.  Since our brief has been to work with the existing furnishings, rather than bringing in rental furniture, we decided to solve the problem of these dominant coloured sofas.  Our solution?  Bring in another colour to compliment and actually tone … (26 comments)

Vancouver Home Staging Meets Bells and Cloches
As a Vancouver Home Stager, I'm always looking for interesting accessories which add a certain panache to a home.  We've all seen the usual vase of flowers or set of candles, to adorn a space.  Pretty predictable items to find in a home that has been staged for sale.  And hey, there's nothing wrong with that.  Sometimes, however, I like to add an item that is a little different, a little out of the ordinary, something approaching more like a "curio".

One item that I've often enjoyed is a glass cloche.  The word … (16 comments)

property styling: The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling! - 05/22/11 10:12 AM
The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling!
I felt like quoting our favourite fowl, Chicken Little, when I laid eyes on this Master Bedroom.  My company, Exit Stage Right, had been hired by the owners to stage this home for sale, and I was just getting a preliminary tour.  The style of the home was west coast contemporary, pretty normal for around this area.  Everything seemed pretty run-of-the mill.  Not too many surprises.  But then we entered the Master Bedroom...
Normally, when you enter a bedroom, the focal point should be the bed, but in this case, my eye … (25 comments)

Matthew Finlason's Advanced Staging Class - SAR - Day 2
We wrapped up our final day of the Advanced Staging Training Class in Seattle, and I headed home last night.  I finally rolled into the driveway at 10:30pm, after a long, dark, rainy drive home.  But who cares!  I am now armed and ready to recharge my batteries and take my staging business, Exit Stage Right to the next stage (so to speak). What was the most important thing I learned in class?  I used to be discouraged  when bidding for a certain job, because I knew I'd be up against … (17 comments)

Matthew Finlason Teaches Advanced Home Staging - Seattle will Never be the Same! It's the end of day one and my head is spinning with all the information we have received from Matthew Finlason.  We have a great group of home stagers in the class, 4 students from the Seattle area, and 3 from Vancouver, B.C.  We have learned a lot of new terminology, and to my delight, this advanced staging course delves more into sales and marketing aspect of our respective businesses, rather than 'how' to stage.  All I can say is that if you have an opportunity to take … (17 comments)

property styling: Does this House Move You? - Staging a House with Emotion - 05/11/11 04:27 AM
Does this House Move You? - Staging a House with Emotion Home staging is not just about placing furniture in a vacant property, or adding fresh towels in the bathroom or throwing some colourful toss cushions on a sofa and calling it a day.  At Exit Stage Right, we believe there is so much more to home staging than meets the eye.  I always find it rather amusing, those who feel they can stage a property themselves and think they don't need a professional Home Stager.  A really good Home Stager will take an uninteresting corner and turn it into an … (14 comments)

property styling: Collage is the New Black - 05/09/11 05:06 PM
Collage is the New Black There has been a lot of emphasis on collages lately.  Kristine Ginsberg creates amazing collages with her beautiful photography, and Kathy Nielson has been sharing tutorials on creating collages, using www.picnik.com.  The latest foray into collages has been the announcement of a new Active Rain challenge to create your own collage.  This collage can be created through your computer, or the old fashioned way, with paper, scissors and glue.  The theme is "what does Active Rain mean to me?".  Our new Active Rain commander-in-chief, Niki, would like Active Rainers to submit their collage by May 31st, … (11 comments)

The Cosmopolitan Hotel - Las Vegas - A Design Explosion
We recently had the pleasure of travelling down to Vegas, and staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.  The "Cosmo" only recently opened in December 2010, and is situated right smack dab on the main strip, next door to the Bellagio.  Yes, the service was wonderful, yes, the restaurant food was delicious, and yes, the location was perfect.  However, for me, as a designer, the real highlight of this hotel was the interior design.  The Rockwell Group was hired to create a sexy, cool, retro interior, reminiscent of somewhere James Bond might want … (16 comments)

Home Staging Tip - Space Planning is Important - Home Staging Vancouver

My company, Exit Stage Right, was hired recently to prepare this cute bungalow for sale.  This home has a lot of great features, including beautiful, refinished, hardwood floors with inlay, and a wood-burning fireplace. When I first visited the home, it was clear that two young children had invaded the space with all their toys, bouncy chairs, cute baby pictures, sippy cups etc.  This is life with young children, and completely understandable.  However, when selling the home, the "day care" look had to go!

The other … (18 comments)

Heritage Home Arts & Crafts Home Staging-Before & After Photos Our Vancouver, B.C. home staging company, Exit Stage Right, was called in to home stage this charming arts & crafts bungalow, built in 1914.  The home had beautiful bones, with wonderful, refinished wainscoting, lots of built-ins and nooks and crannies.  However, the house just needed a little icing on the cake.  With all the woodwork, the home seemed a little dark and stark.  We brought in some softness with flowers, lightened up the dark wood by adding light coloured cushions, brought in a bit of spring with a cream and bright … (14 comments)

Signs, Signs, Everywhere There's Signs - Home Selling in Vancouver As a Home Stager in Vancouver, I often give advice on curb appeal.  I suggest several things: - Plant colourful flowers - Add planters with flowers or ornamental trees - Paint the front door a contrasting colour - Clean up the yard, store the hose reel, pick up after Fido - Clean the windows - Prune the bushes - Cut back the tree to better see the house - Add a new mail box - Add more up-to-date house numbers One point that has never come up before, is the question … (16 comments)

property styling: Sneak Peek at a Heritage House to be Staged to Sell - 05/01/11 03:55 AM
Sneak Peek at a Heritage House to be Staged to Sell Our company, Exit Stage Right, has been called in to stage this lovely, heritage home.  I'm so excited to be staging this home for sale.  I'm a huge lover of heritage homes.  My own home was built in 1919, not old by Eastern standards, but pretty darn old for here in the West. The home owner was telling me that this home was built in 1914.  The home owner has lovingly restored this home over the past 11 years, and this has clearly been a labour of love.  All the … (22 comments)
