Reinventing the Wheel

By
Real Estate Agent with LA Condo Lifestyles

By Coco Clayman-Cook

I am a big fan of mentoring because I don't believe in reinventing the wheel.  If I can take an afternoon a month and learn how to do something or even how not to do something, I can save much time, energy and money.  I have two mentors that I have used for years.  I usually mentor at least two new realtors.  Both situations are extremely rewarding.  From my mentors I learn essential information about the actions I am about to take.  I learn from my mentor's mistakes and from their victories.  It is also a great motivator as I am accountable to my mentors.

From the realtors I mentor I learn a great many things.  Anytime you learn something and then teach it to someone else it strengthens your skills.  Consequently each time I share valuable info I become a better realtor and a better business woman.  I also am refreshed by the energy and commitment of my mentees.  It is essential to give back and stay in contact with the energy and innovation that comes with the next generation.

I agree with you. I have become the short sale expert in my area. I now teach a class that has been slammed pack about once a month. I dont charge for this class. I feel like if I can help one person learn and prosper I am doing a great thing!

This is so hot.  It really is.  I always took beatings when I was younger.  After I grew up...no more worries.  I now really lean on others so that I don't have to take those beatings anymore.

Coco,  Having a mentor shortens the time to be up and running for a new agent, and for a seasoned agent it affords accountability. If nothing else, Being accountable for prospecting whatever form it is is awesome to have.

Hi Coco,  I always suggest to consider a mentor program when new agents are deciding which office to sign with.

Not many admit openly that they have a mentor, thank you for sharing your successes with us.  We all should be more open to learning new things and sharing with those (who wish to learn from us of course) what we know.

Most often, two heads are better than one. A mentor is good to ask advice, talk things out and re-enforce your ideas and thoughts.
