The Battle of the Bay!

Today was the Giants vs A's game at the Oakland Coliseum (now called McAfee), and we were all suited up with
tickets and ready to go.  The truck was packed, kids were dressed, tickets in hand and we were off for a fun and
exciting day. As we drove toward the stadium, I couldn't help but remember an historical event that took place
when these two teams met back in 1989.

Do you remember the 1989 earthquake that hit the Bay Area and levelled many parts of the city?  I remember
it clearly.  The San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's were meeting for the World Series Championship.  At
5:05pm on a Friday October 17th, the BIG ONE Hit.  7.1 magnitude. I will never forget it.  Being at the game
today reminded me of that day back in "89" and how it pulled apart the Bay Area, but at the same time, pulled
us all together, much like 911.

The Bay Bridge had sections literally collapse, the Cypress Structure completely gave way, and hundreds were
injured and even killed.  Every time these two teams meet, it is commonly referred to as "The Battle of The Bay"
and it reminds me of that horrible earthquake.  But today would be different, we were going to have fun, and all
has pretty much been healed since that day back in 1989.

The ballpark was packed today to see these two teams meet once again.  Another battle of the Bay, and guess
who won?  I wish I knew and I still don't know, we had to leave early cause the little guy felt sick and just wanted
to go home.  All in all, it was a fun day, the tailgate party was awesome, the company and people were great,
but when your baby is sick, nothing else matters.

He's home now in bed with a 102 fever, and we'll fight a different battle now.  The common cold and flu. I'm off
to check the scoreboard now to see who won the game...but here at home, my 10 year old has his own little
Battle of fighting off this bug.  Now it's a trip to the store for tylenol, chicken noodle soup and
some gatorade.  All that combined with lot's of love, is a sure cure for the "battle of the bug", here in our home.
One thing we have learned, is that the cold and flu, is the gift that keeps on giving!!  So Be well!

Brad, I remember that day very well.  I was reading a book on the balcony when the earth started to shake from beneath my feet.  I was terrifed.  I had just moved to California a couple of months earlier and this was my first big earth quake.  I lived in Oakland only a few miles from the Cypress Structure.   I will never forget that day.  Your post got me to take a trip down memory lane and it wasn't so terrifying this time around. Thanks for taking me back.

Steve - it is alot easier to deal with now, but looking back, it was a very frightening time.  It seems like just yesterday, but this was 18 years ago.  I was working in our Branch in Concord, talking on the phone with another employee in Oakland.  She screamed,"Oh My God, we're having an earthquake" and then the phone went dead.  Just then, our building started to shake violently in Concord on Willow Pass Rd.  I jumped out of my desk and ran outside...yes...ran outside, I didn't want to be buried alive.  Man, I'm glad we survived that Steve.  Welcome to California huh?  Thanks for sharing and commenting.

I remember watching that game in New York and it was interrupted.  And kept thinking, among other things, thank Goodness I won't ever see (or FEEL) an earthquake.  And spoke too soon, I was 15 miles outside of Northridge when that hit.  I hope your son feels better!!

Brad,

I remember it well.  I was in Redwood City towards 101 and going over the railroad tracks.  I was with my mom on my way to sports practice, I don't remember which.  I remember just boucing all over in our 1980's Volvo.  We pulled over because we thought we got a flat from the train tracks.  In actuality, we had just witnessed the greatest quake of our day.  I will never forget the aftershocks, they were the scariest part.  They would happen whenever, and for weeks.  My grandmother, rest her soul, lived in the Santa Cruz area where a majority of the devastation was, had to deal with the worst.  They had mud slides, foundation issues, you name it.  That was a crazy time.  At least we don't get that stuff often.  My wife, who has lived in California for about 5 years now, has only had to feel one earthquake.  It scared the **** out of her, but at least it isn't a regular occurance.

Neal!  YOU'RE A WINNER!!!  Yes, Yes..IT's BARRY BONDS!!!!   Tell him what he's won Carole... LOL!
Thanks my friend, I was in the nose bleeds with a 12x optical zoom on my digital.  Took 20 long shots and a good cropping just to get that one. You are too kind for the compliment Neal, thanks!!

Carole - the earthquake is mother natures way of shaking things up once in awhile, (seriously, no pun intended), while it has a natural and almost spiritual way of bringing people closer together.
Thanks for your hopes for the little guy, we're waiting to get the throat culture test results :-(
On the brighter side, another nice thing about the Active Rain community, you don't have to worry if any of us are contagious..  :-)

Jonathan - Most the people I know that were driving at the time, did the very same thing!  One of my co-workers at the game yesterday, told me he was in Benicia when it hit, he pulled over because he thought his tires were flat.  Once he pulled over, he saw all the people coming out of their homes, at first thinking they wanted to help him with his flat, only to find out there had just been a 7.1 earthquake.  Luckily, he was in a residential area and unharmed.  They happen everyday, we just don't feel them.
