Move over Microsoft- Office Suite on a $0 Budget

By
Real Estate Agent with EXIT Realty Beatrice Associates 9506757

As an office owner, new agents or part time agents struggle to spend the money on the Microsoft Office Suite which can run upwards of $400- 500 dollars.  Some must haves for a real estate agent are:

  1. Microsoft Outlook
  2. Microsoft Word

The other programs I highly recommend are:

  1. Microsoft Excel
  2. Microsoft Publisher
  3. Microsoft Power Point

For the agents on a budget I have compiled a list of alternative programs that can duplicate what the Microsoft Office has to offer.

The first program is OpenOffice an open source office productivity suite.  It's free and totally legal for you to use.  It has The equivelant of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.  The great part of OpenOffice is these programs can open and save files in the Microsoft format.  It has a publisher program but unfortunately does not work with Microsoft Publisher.  But what do you want for FREE!!

The other piece that helps in replaceing Microsoft Outlook is Mozilla's Thunderbird. Thunderbird as an email client with an address book  to organize your emails and clients.  By adding Lightning, a Thunderbird add-on, you can add tasks and a calendar.  There are other add ons to customize your contact manager, calander and email client.

If youhave been working on a budget and been frustrated with some of the tools you haver (or don't have) give these programs a whirl.  I think you'll be amazed at what you can get for FREE!!

Also, try out Mozilla's Firefox, a highly customizable browser that is much more stable than Internet Explorer.

I've used Open Office for years, and like it considerably. The only thing missing is an equivalent for Outlook.

Hi Kevin: I had not heard of Thunderbird.  Since I like Firefox - I think I will have to give it a try!

Thanks Kevin.  I do have Open Office and I like all that it offers.....I like that I can write something and make it into PDF format with the click of a button.
Sometimes though I will save something and email it to my office and then I can't open it because I didn't change the format first.    UUggh!    But, like you said,  what do you want for free?

Kevin - I've heard of open office but never used it. I'll stick with Microsoft office due to it having outlook.

Hi Kevin - I use Microsoft Office but will check out Open Office to look at the differences, if any.  Thanks for sharing your information.

Excellent information. As a Mac user I roll along with Entourage for email and the Mac Office. Upgraded to the latest Safari which is quite feature-full but use Firefox as a mainstay as, like you say, is more stable.

I will go give it a look-see. I just bought a new computer that has nothing on it and really do not want to spend another $400-500 on programing...Thanks
