Flashing.
It's not just that weird guy in the trench coat, who hangs around the train station, showing his "wares". (No really... it's not!)
It's also the device that helps keep water from following a pipe that pierces your roof, or walls, into the building, and causing severe water damage.
Anytime you have a vent, or pipe the goes through the roof, it should be properly "flashed" to make sure that water doesn't migrate down the sides of that pipe, and enter the home.
But... what do you do, if it's a "homemade" job, and you're unfamiliar with "flashing"? You're handy, but you're not THAT handy?
Well, the least you can do it put multiple "buckets" in place to catch any dripping water... and put flexible tubing to help drain those buckets so they don't overflow.
It'll do the job, and what's more... it'll make the inspector laugh out loud (or gasp with horror) when he spots it.
Here is one of those scenarios, that's clearly installed in Rube Goldberg's house.
Boy, the crap we find on inspections.
