Georgia Super Speeder LawThe Georgia Super Speeder Law is sure to make your wallet tighten up, and your foot to be a bit lighter on the pedal when it becomes law, January 1, 2010.

If you are inclined to exceed the speed limit, you are going to feel this one right in your wallet in the form of higher state fines (called fees.)

How much higher? The new law titled HB160 tacks-on another two-hundred-dollar state-fee for any driver convicted of speeding at 75-or-more on any two-lane roads.. OR convicted of speeding at 85-and-over anywhere in Georgia. Those new state fees will be in addition to any local fines already in effect in the jurisdiction where the speeding offense occurs.

According to the new law, anyone convicted under the new law will be called a "super speeder" and will be subject to the additional fee. And if you fail to pay the new fee, you'll get an additional $50 fee along with the suspension of your driving privileges and license. Ouch!

Georgia State PatrolOf course, the idea is to change the driving habits of the people that cause more accidents...you've heard the saying, "speed kills." It's a highway safety law designed to save lives by getting people to slow down.

But the fees will help save lives in another way...the fees collected under this new law will be used to help fund Georgia's trauma care hospital system, where some 60% of the patients are from auto crashes.

So, the next time you are on the open roads of Georgia and think, "Ah...let's let the top down and go for it..." you might have more that messed up hair!

They will probably be able to build a new hospital with drivers over Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving breaks.  When we drive to Florida no one is going less then 80 on 95......

Happy Holidays

I suspect that it won't be long before most states adopt a stricter fine schedule as they look for new sources of income in the future.  Drivers Beware!

Kristin: I know exactly what you mean...done the Florida drive many times....never forget ouside of Sarasota doing close to 100 (yes shame on me...and I was following someone) and the patrol car came out of the median from nowhere and got the guy I was following.....since then, we keep it more reasonable!

Gary: And we really do have people in this state that drive way to fast.

Tom: You can already see the increase of officers on streets and roads looking for "revenue"

Tom: Or at least until people slow down?

Speed doesn't kill and the most dangerous drivers aren't always the ones going the fastest...  In fact, rural interstates are the safest roads, but have the highest speed limits.

It is about revenue.

Thanks for sharing!  I know that the City of Atlanta igovernment s struggling with the budget and cutting the police and fire services, so I think that an extra fee for speeders is a reasonable solution, especially if it helps put some more police on the road.
