Selling The World To Devil...

I always said that two regimes: Stalin and Hitler - were two sides of the same coin. I keep saying that the two regimes we allies, and it is a big question who was a bigger culprit. And it is the first time I saw and heard the confirmation to that in the film "The Soviet Story".

"The Soviet Story" is a story of an Allied power, which helped the Nazis to fight Jews and which slaughtered its own people on an industrial scale. Assisted by the West, this power triumphed on May 9th, 1945. Its crimes were made taboo, and the complete story of Europe's most murderous regime has never been told. Until now..."

The world shied away from acknowledging that there was another regime fully responsible for the the unspeakable atrocities of the 20th century, and had Hitler not betrayed Stalin and attacked his buddy so against the spirit of two biggest criminals but by the same token in a way criminals stab each other, we do not know what would have happened to the world.

StalinThe Soviets and Russia today have never acknowledged any guilt, lied to the world about every step they ever made, tried to hide every incriminating document, and when caught red-handed, declared every document a fake... then for some time they were simply quiet about it, and now, with Putin and Medvedev/Putin they are again in the quest to dominate. Aggressively protecting the wrong doing as a necessity, or declaring that it never happened, or what happened was needed to survive.

We all know that people, who were torturing prisoners in German camps are still being brought to justice. Do you know that people who were mass murdering prisoners in Soviet camps are honored citizens of Russia, and can freely go and live in England as England does not consider them criminals? And no other country considers them criminals. Demjanjuk, who worked in a Nazi camp is awaiting trial in Germany. Hundreds if not thousands of demjanuks that killed and tortured people in Stalin camps are not.

And, of course, Russia does not consider them criminals. They are still alive, they are still there, they are making public appearances and they have never been called to justice. And they have never been denounced.

Check the schedule, and watch The Soviet Story on TV. Get courage to do so, as it is not an easy entertainment. But do not switch the channel when you see it. Because September 11s can happen when we forget the lessons of history.

The film was produced by Latvian filmmaker. It was met in Russia with cynicism and sarcasm (an old story), presented as a way for Latvia to blame Russia. Is it 100% objective? Can we squeeze decades and millions into an hour or so and be absolutely objective? Latvia had its own dark moments: they had 11 battalions exterminating Jews. The film does not mention them, while those who were killing Jews have blood all  over them... But one wrong does not make the other wrong right...

The annotation to DVD says: "The Soviet Story is the most powerful antidote to the sanitization of the past. The film is gripping, powerful, and audacious" - The Economist, May 2008.

The antidote... I want to believe it

P.S. It was a bit of surprise to learn that "The first TV station in the U.S. scheduled to air the film will be WDSC 15 Daytona Beach, Florida on October 15 at 9:00 pm". It was. A pleasant surprise.

I've heard that Stalin starved something like 60 million people but I wasn't aware of killing Jews.  I also read that the US media in the 1930s and 1940s promoted Stalin as a really good guy.  They admired how he ran the country.  I guess it's kind of like how many admire Fidel Castro and sing the praises of that wonderful country while thousand of desparate Cubans are killed trying to escape.  Many find it easier just to commit suicide.  But they have a wonderful healthcare system and free education.  Read this and then imagine having a statue on this guy in Central Park

Jon,

They say that those that don't learn from history are bound to repeat it!

"It was a dream,

that captivated millions,

it was a vision,

that haunted nations

It was mankind's greatest desire

until the day it became a reality!

The Soviet story."

If we don't learn quick this could end:

The liberal story!

Jon- I am also writing about Stalin and America's love and adoration for him in those days. Horrific murders kept quiet, swept under the rug. Now we have Hollywood whackos and even those I used to respect - making these mass killing machines into honored revolutionaries, like Oliver Stone's love for Stalin and of course, the stupid movie about Che- who killed Cubans and now is honored on Tshirts and bikinis in the fashion industry! SICK! Then we have them all in love with Chavez who is forcing his people into extreme poverty.

I am ashamed of that dark period in Latvian history. People do horrible things for self preservation. Hitler loved Latvians- blonde hair and blue eyes- we typified his perfect looking people,' the perfect gene'. And Latvia had a choice to make- who would they rather be ruled by, Stalin or Hitler. This is How EVIL and murderous Stalin was! That a country would choose to be allies with Hitler instead of Stalin.

The history books are being changed but it is not just the Russians who are doing this- right here in the US- there are dark secrets of the US being partners with Stalin and yet- no one talks about it. Well, my mother did. See, we got screwed big time by FDR. Katerina

In the days between WWI, and WWII Americans found much to be admired by the Communists, and the Nazis.  Hitler was constantly appeased by leaders of their surrounding European countries even when his intentions became obvious to everyone.  Mussolini was extremely popular with American journalists, after all, he made the trains run on time.  Stalin was marketed as a very progressive leader, a champion of the people so to speak.

Remind you of anything going on now?

Those who do not study history, are doomed to repeat it.

Stalin knew how to keep a good secret - Obama has learned from the best - secret deals - takeovers and unions - how sad for America!

Thanks for bringing us the history lesson - some Americans feel the need to learn the hard way!

Paul - unfortunatley this is not really a history lesson, as there are more than enough attempts to reverse the history, and it happens today. It is not just historical, cultural, and, in a nutshell, Academical. It is in the world right now

Tim - Stalin rounded up those who ran from fascist Germany to USSR fooled by its propaganda. They were given to Gestapo. Jews, but not only Jews. The enemies of Germany, who ran to the wrong country, ended up in camps with the help of Stalin.

Tim, if you can find the film, watch it. We do not know that. yes, we know from logic that extremes meet (I do not know the terminology here, so it is awkward), and they: Stalin and Hitler, communism and fascism are simply sides of the same coin. This film is showing the extent of their similarity and unity.

What's more, it is showing it not as the means to survive the war, as Russians often try to portray it, but as their core belief.

Hi Jon.  Thanks for making us aware of this film.  As a former social studies and WWII teacher I am familiar with many of Stalin's murderous campaigns against his own people and those who fell victim to the Red Army as it "liberated" Eastern Europe in pushing back the Nazis from Russia in 1943-45.  I certainly had a change of heart when I visited Lithuania in the fall of 2006.  I was of the opinion that we should have pulled out of NATO after the dissolution of the Soviet Union but after talking to many Lithuanians and then seeing what happened with Georgia I have changed my mind.  It reinforced that quote oft attributed to that great British statesman Palmerston:

"NATIONS HAVE NEITHER ETERNAL FRIENDS NOR ETERNAL ENEMIES; ONLY ETERNAL INTERESTS"

Thanks for the insights!

Kevin - I think the problem is that while we treat it as history, it is something that can become our future. Not literally, as things change, but we are not into technicalities. This is dangerous what happens in bully regimes, but it is also dangerous what happens to US and complacent West

Bill - you are absolutely correct and what bothered me most was the feeling that it is coming back, quietly, "nicely", but it is creeping back. The film shows it. You will see things from today, and they are fitting that past perfectly... so far not on the industrial scale, but it never starts with industrial scale, it ends with it. And when the head of the country finds no problem with this troubled past, strongly accepting no blame and only a fraction of that past, it means a lot.

If this film does not raise hair, what does?

Katerina - I have only one disagreement with you. Latvia (and Estonia, and Lithuania) did not really have a choice. They were taken over by the Soviet Union right before the war, and then were taken by Nazi Germany, when they pushed into the Soviet Union, and then, when the was was over, the Soviet Union again got the hold of them.

And all of those were oppressive regimes. I am not sure about the role of Green Brothers, but collaboration with Nazis was widespread. Can I blame Latvians for that? No. They just saw with their own eyes what Staling did to them when took them in 1940, and they were sure there just could not be anything worse than that.

In that sense maybe they were right. But they still got something equal to Stalin.

Ron - Actually when it became clear, the West tried to put forces together, and somehow they did not do a good job, and Stalin, who was before adamantly against Hitler, suddenly changed the tone, and in 2 months the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and secret Protocol had been signed.

They simply made their choice. If you check the timing, you would notice that WWII started immediately after the Soviet Union ratified the Pact of 1939. It was signed on August 23, then the Supreme Soviet ratified it on August 30, and September 1, 1939 German army crossed the border of Poland, joined by Soviet Armies on September 17.

Then, when Poland was brought to the knees, German and Soviet Armies had a joined Victory Parade in Brest.

Jon-you are most correct with your assessment of the Nazi-Soviet "non-aggression" pact.  Hitler was not worried about Britain or France when we went into Poland he was worried about The RED ARMY which was the only thing to stop his expansion to the EAST.

Hitler enjoyed the "Sietzkreig" (phoney war) on the western front from September 3rd, 1939 till April 9th, 1940 when he invaded Denmark and Norway.

Hitler needed oil, iron, even wheat, and he got it all from the Soviets

Jon-you know your history quite well!  Hitler even timed the onset of Operation Barbarossa to allow the Soviet trains loaded with raw materials to enter the German controlled zones before the first bombs fell on the longest day of the year in June 1941 when he invaded the Soviet Union.

Bruce - 45 minutes after the German planes crossed the border, my mom, who was after 4 years of Medical School on a mandatory field practice in a hospital in a small border town in Ukraine, had her arms covered in blood in the operating room. It was close to 5 AM on June 22nd 1941. Her parents were still alive for the next 2.5 months.

And it was 10 years before I was born, which, given the circumstances, could easily not happen

Sharon - I would  not be that concerned if this was a film about Stalin. It is not only about Stalin and Hitler, it is also about what is happening today, about Putin... It is about what can happen to us, and this is why I think it is very important to see it.

It is a known history, but tabooed. Justice never been done.
