Walking Plates to Success

  • Goals
  • Outline
  • Execution
One child I know told me she was going to make walking plates with her grandma.  Walking Plates?  (Translation at the end of the blog)  I wasn't sure what she meant, but it started me thinking.

We can learn a lot from children.  Their viewpoint is less complicated than ours.  And they aren't afraid to ask questions.  Plus they still listen because they don't want to miss anything.  A friend's grandson asks her each time they get together, "What's the game plan Grandma?"  You've got to appreciate that mindset.  He wants to know what is going to occur in their time together.  What will they achieve?  In what order will events happen?  And what participation is expected of him?

We all need a game plan, especially for the business of real estate.  As independent contractors, we have a lot of leeway in creating our outlines to success.  Working at home can have distractions.  Working at an office doesn't change that either - a different set of distractions come into play.  But we still need to use our walking plates to lay out our path so those distractions won't disturb our ultimate goal.

Personally, I like to set out my plan daily, weekly & monthly.  The daily plan probably changes the most.  A client appointment may need to be added.  Or a not-to-be-missed webinar may come up.  I move my walking plates around to accommodate changes.  The weekly goals include client updates, blogging & social networking.  And the monthly goals include my sphere mailings, print ad entry, website evaulation & community meetings.  These are broad strokes and will be more detailed as each item is completed.

My walking plates will line up each month to get me back to the starting line so I can follow my path once again.   Oh, and the Walking Plates...you've probably figured out by now that they are Stepping Stones!

Susan, they may be stepping stones, but I think I like the name "walking plates" better!

Susan, those "walking plates" caught my attention!  You are right, the daily plan has to be somewhat flexible as long as you don't lose sight of the big picture!

Silvia, Exactly!  Hopefully with a plan you can move pieces around but the big picture will remain.

Hi Susan ~ Walking plates / stepping stones - good one! And I'm tickled by the boy's "What's the game plan?" What a riot and as you say right to the point.
