Yesterday I posted a blog about driving on Daytona Beach. Daytona Beach is one of the few cities that allows this privilege. I see it as one more benefit to buying real estate here. But I'm addressing this subject again, to elaborate on the responsibilities that come with this privilege.
In 1973, the Endangered Species Act (also known as the Habitat Conservation Plan or HCP) was passed, which prohibits activities that threaten or endanger any endangered species. Since sea turtles come up onto our beaches and lay their eggs in the sand, this area falls under the protection of this act. However, we're still able to drive on our beaches, through a permit that was obtained through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
To keep from losing the permit that allows us to continue driving on our beaches, certain guidelines must be adhered to. This is why Beach Patrol Officers will issue citations to anyone who is caught breaking these rules. And in an aggressive crackdown to target anyone who is driving in a conservation zone, video cameras have been installed.
If you're visiting, or new to the Daytona Beach area, here are a few things you need to know...
- Teal colored poles can be found near sand dunes. You may not drive or park in these areas.
- You may not disturb any sea turtle nests.
- During certain times of the year, the oceanfront condos will not be allowed to have any lights on after dark, on the ocean side of the buildings. This is to keep the hatching baby sea turtles from becoming disoriented as they make their trek to the ocean.
For more information on these rules, visit the Volusia County web site, in the beach conservation section. And for more information on preserving our beaches, read my post about the drastic erosion and plant life damage that happened after the hurricanes in 2004, and what is being done to preserve our environment.
