Madison's Local Food Book Club

Book Clubs are one of our favorite group activities here in beautiful Madison, Georgia .  One of my favorites is also our newest - centered on Local Foods and Sustainable Farming.

We began with Bringing It to the Table by Wendell Berry - a collection of essays written over the past 30 years. I had not "met" Mr Berry before reading his work, but his works both enlightened and delighted me.

Next up was Deep Economy by Bill McKibben, who makes the case that more does not always equal better, and that value is not well measured with just money.  The first time I read it, I yearned for a group of local friends to discuss it with - well, thanks to Jon Tonge, owner of Dog Ear Books , Madison's independent book store, I've had my chance.  Well worth the wait.

Coming up in July is Everthing I want to do is Illegal: War Stories from the Local Food Front by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms. Joel makes the case for deregulation of family farms, showing quite adroitly that most of our consumer protection rules are written with Industrial Farming in mind, and are ludicrous at best and anti-competitive at worst when applied to family farms.

This book club meets at Dog Ear Books on the second Tuesday of each month, and is open to all.

Madison is the county seat of beautiful Morgan County, Georgia - conveniently located about an hour east of metro Atlanta and 1/2 hour south of Athens.  Farming is alive and well in Morgan County, and new farms are sprouting up regularly.  We'd love to become the breadbasket of metro Atlanta!

I specialize in selling land and farm properties in Morgan County and the surrounding area - give me a call if you're thinking about coming over the the rural side of life.
