"C'Mon Baby Light My Fire"... Grill Safety for Summer Cookouts
As we appraoch 4th of July and the weekend Barbeque Traditions, this is a timely post that serves as a reminder for grilling safety! Be careful when you light up this weekend and that goes for fireworks too!
"C'Mon Baby Light My Fire"... Grill Safety for Summer Cookouts
Two things happened to me today.
1. I discovered www.Blip.fm which is great fun. I was enjoying this wonderful song by Carlos Santana & Jose Feliciano & Ricky Martin
2. Simultaneously with the song, I came across a safety notice of interest. Inspired by the song, I thought I should share with you. The song? "C'mon baby Light my Fire "
As summer continues to heat up, barbecue fans are reminded to keep the fire outside.
I didn't realize this was a necessary reminder, but according to the National Fire Protection Association, from 2003-2006, (Evidently there were not newer statistics available) there were an average of almost 8,000 home fires involving grills, barbecues, and hibachis. Worse yet, these fires caused an average of 10 deaths, and 120 reported injuries.
One third of those fires involving home structures started on a porch or balcony. The main culprit: lighter fluid type substances and flammable gas.
So, we're gearing up for the biggest barbecue of them all - 4th of July Weekend.
Here's some tips to keep the "fire"works only to our starry skies:
1. Only use grills (barbecues, hibachis, etc) outdoors. A tent is NOT outdoors.
2. Keep the grill well away from siding, decks, railing, and watch the patio roofs and eaves.
3. Children and pets do not mix with grills. Keep the 'fun" in family fun. Keep a "safe" zone of three feet minimum.
4. Use long handled grill tools, and roll up your sleeves.
5. Remove grease and fat build up.
6. If you're using a charcoal grill, the tray beneath is not a safe place to store the lighter fluid. At all costs, avoid the impulse to "add more" lighter fluid to an already burning fire.
7. Yearly, check the hoses of your propane grills. A light soap and water mixture applied to the hose will reveal escaping propane.
8. Do not store propane gas cylinders in your garage or outbuildings.Hopefully, these 8 simple steps will keep your summer safe from unnecessary injury and property loss. Enjoy your cook outs, and remember the ageless adage, "Safety First".
Besides a juicy NY Strip Steak, my favorite summer barbecue includes brats and potato salad - what are your favorites?
