Do you know one of the twelve most distinctive destinations in the Country??? Westerly, RI is one of them!!

That's what the National Trust for Historic Preservation called Westerly: "one of the twelve most distinctive destinations in the country." And you know they've seen a lot of destinations So what makes Westerly so different? Well, from a historical perspective, Wilcox Park has 14 acres of beautiful landscaping, and downtown Westerly is a treasure trove of Victorian Architecture. Watch Hill also has a Victorian Elegance, not to mention a number of beaches, inns, and restaurants fronting the water, a village of shops perfect for combing antiquing with a leisurely stroll. Perhaps the most fun piece of history in Watch Hill is the flying horse Carousel, likely the oldest in the country and definitely the last running carousel where children can still ride horses that really fly on chains without being attached to the ground.

But history is far from the only thing that makes Westerly distinctive. A growing arts community has bolstered the monthly art strolls, which combines with a number of electric shops and restaurants to make downtown a unique experience. Culture is present in spades, from the Summer Pops, to the River Glow, to the year to round program of theater (including Broadway shows) at the refurbished Granite Theater. Or visit the winery at Lang-worthy Farm, call first or you'll be whinning instead of wining.

The most distinctive part of Westerly may be the beaches. Napatree Point is protected bird sanctuary with sheltered anchorage for boaters. Misquamicut Beach is Rhode Islands largest state beach, stretching for seven miles of nonstop fun. It boasts amusement park, water slides, carousel, mini golf, and even big screen movies right on the beach in the evening. An on Guy Fawkes Day, the Misquamicut Players hold a free bonfire and re enactment right on the beach. If that's still not distinctive enough, the Chorus of Westerly has a giant annual celebration feast and show on Twelfth Night and Pawcatuck River occasionally is filled with thousands of racing rubber ducks.
