The facility attracts scientists from all over to explore within labs, which contain running seawater systems, large marine mammal pools, and specialized seawater labs. The LML integrates its research with the UC Santa Cruz marine biology program to insure the future of marine education and preservation.

Encompassing the theme of preservation and education the Monterey Bay Aquarium demonstrates breath taking exhibits and shows.  Looking south of Santa Cruz on a clear day the tip of Monterey Bay comes into view and most make the gorgeous drive down Highway 1 to visit Monterey and the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium sees over 1.8 million visitors a season that awe over the displays of over 650 different types of marine plant and animal species.  

Heading back up Highway 1, Santa Cruz has some the best marine recreational activities and events available. The famous Yacht Harbor and Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf connect locals and visitors alike to the amazing adventures of the coast. Yacht Harbor consists of 800 slips that commercial and recreational vessels call home. This gem offers many boating services including visitor berthing and dry shortage throughout the year. The coastline fills with white sails, especially during the annual 505 sailboat races, when boat enthusiasts take to the water and compete for the coveted first place.

The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf provides the perfect setting for exciting events and excellent dining. As a highlight of the area, the wharf maintains a busy atmosphere, especially during the summer season. Local business offer boat and kayak rentals along with fishing trips and bay cruises. If you’re cruising the Santa Cruz coast between April and December a spotting of Humpback whales is a high probability. Then after a long day of enjoying the beach or sailing the ocean blue, the variety of restaurants on the wharf with satisfy any hungry visitor. A local favorite Riva’s prepares fresh seafood and the hearty clam chowder in a warm bread bowl is a specialty.
