As 26 year residents of Lake Ridge neither my husband nor I gave much thought to the fact that land in our subdivision may have played a role in the Civil War.

In December 1862 Confedrate cavalry forces in the area crossed the Occoquan River at Selecman's Ford close to Antietam Elementary to do battle with Union cavalry units, defeating them and capturing 100 prisoners.

The plaque below was placed in front of Antietam Elementary on June 14, 2010. Antietam Elementary is also shown.

COMMUTING

  • Express bus service to the Pentagon and Washington, DC is available within Lake Ridge and at the entrance to Lake Ridge in the VDOT Commuter Lot
  • Carpools usually meet at the VDOT Commuter Lot at the entrance to Lake Ridge - see Omnimatch for more specific details
  • Slugging (some erroneously call it hitching a ride which it is) is a result of the need to use HOV lanes on the I-95 as much as possible. Commuters form a line at a designated Slug Line Stop in Lake Ridge - the VDOT Commuter at the Lake Ridge entrance. For example, a driver will pull up headed for the Pentagon, but needs one more passenger to qualify for HOV-3. The first person in line going to the Pentagon will join the others in the car and away they go. It's free commuting for the slugger and gives the driver availability to HOV lanes on I-95 - win win!!
  • Train The Virginia Railway Express Woodbridge Station with rail service to Springfield, Crystal City and Union Station in Washington, DC is approximately a 20 minute drive from Lake Ridge in the morning rush hour. At Springfield you can switch to Metrorail that gives you access to the entire National Capital Area subway system.
  • Local buses run regulary throughout the Greater Woodbridge area as well as other areas of Prince William County. Lake Ridge is one of the communities served by Omnilink
  • MCB Quantico is less than 30 minutes by car
  • Fort Belvoir is approximately 30 minutes by car

Hi Karen,

I do love your historical posts.  This action was all part of the manuevering right after the Battle of Fredericksburg.  That is incredible having 38,000 residents, and yet they were wise enough to set back so much preserve land for everyone to enjoy and have their space.

Karen, really nice post about your area and the history.  There are 12 homes in my subdivision........much smaller than yours!  I love the history lesson.

Hi Karen, another fantastic Local post with some excellent history to boot. Reading this reminded me that I attended Robert E. Lee Junior High School here in Texas where Schools used to be named after veterans pf the Civil War and of the Texas revolution.

I thought that might have been the Battle of Antietam, so I pulled out my history book only to find that it was fought in Maryland, not Virginia, and three months earlier than your local battle there.

I've always been split between the benefits of a dam and the things that the dam destroys. I think I first felt that when the Aswan high dam flooded some of ancient Egypt.

Russel  I had to look Antietam up as well, although ours was a akirmish whereas Antietam had the most American casualties in one day in American history

Jim  Dams are necessary since we demand more and more and more.  They are not always well planned and maintained
