Retire In Victoria

Living in Paradise is a real privilege, Greater Victoria continues to be Canada's premiere retirement destination for decades and the are no signs of this changing anytime soon.

With its mild climate, short if any winter season, lush and beautiful surroundings, any and all amenities and essential services, and still being in Canada it is easy to see why so many people make Greater Victoria their home in retirement.

The question is, can Greater Victoria handle the continuing trend of more and more of its population retiring, both those that have lived here for decades and the newly arrived retirees?

With Boomers retiring at record numbers over the next decades, all over North America, there will be increased demand on services, health care, housing, personal care, etc. With the changes in population composition there will be increased demand for a totally different type of housing, that caters to the aging and elderly. A Type of housing that offers convenience, privacy, security, age in place adjustments but still offer independence, pride of ownership and enhance quality and enjoyment of life.

Greater Victoria, is likely one of the best place in Canada to expect that these changes in society and in demand for services and housing will be accommodated a little easier than in some other areas.

As a community we have a long history to provide services and assistance to those retiring, there is a good set of infrastructure in place already, and there is the political and economic will and commitment to continue to be the best area in Canada to Retire.

There will be challenges along the way, one of which is the increasing need for specialized and trained services and care offered by both public and private organizations and companies. The reality of the aging of our population off course offers a great deal of opportunity as well for small and larger businesses to rethink, retool and refocus their business models towards servicing those that need quality, affordable products and services.

One of the trends we are already noticing is the increase of larger and smaller companies offering home delivery or at home services and care.....This is like Deja-Vue for me, as a child I grew up where the milk, bread, coal, vegetables, and potatoes where all sold by home delivery with vendors Life is Beautiful in Victoriaselling there wares from a cart or small truck. These type of services might see a return to our streets, and why not.

So we see that everything that went by the way side, is making a return in a new and more efficient and effective way, but it is interesting that we as a society are always making adjustments, big and small to make the best or our current needs and requirements.

Greater Victoria is getting ready for the boomers who are starting to retire, we welcome you.

We see more and more people realizing that the next 20 to 30 years will be a period of change of historic proportions, with a need for creative, innovative thinking and decision making on every level of government and public enterprise, it is a little scary, but very exciting at the same time.

But that is just my take on the aging population and it's impact on Victoria BC Canada, what do you think...?
