Maine Wildlife Park: Wild Fun For the Family in Gray Maine

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes & Gardens | The Masiello Group

Maine Wildlife ParkIf you have not yet been (or even if you have,) I would highly recommend taking a trip to the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray Maine.  I went this past Saturday with my mother and my 7 year old son.

Quinn Conquers the Forest! What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday, have fun, and learn about Maine's wildlife all at the same time.  The park is large enough to be able to spend several hours walking around the various paths and displays, but yet small enough that you won't be exhausted at the end of your visit.  There is even a picnic area and you can easily run back out to your car to grab a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park.  Click here to view a map of the Maine Wildlife Park.

Located at 56 Game Farm Road, just off Route 26 in Gray, Maine, the park has an incredible array of Maine animals on display and educational programs throughout the season.  The animal residents of the Maine Wildlife Park were all either injured or previously kept as illegal pets and are not able to survive in the wild.

Beautiful Turtle pondTwo of the most interesting residents are the albino raccoon and the albino porcupine.  There are also deer, bears, moose, bobcats, turtles, & raptors just to name a few and you will notice chipmunks EVERYWHERE!

Many of the animals have large, natural setting enlcosures, and there is even an automated audio tour you can use with your cell phone.

My biggest problem was to get my 7 year old to stop taking pictures.  He was so excited about being able to take pictures of the animals, but I was concerned that he was going to spend so much time looking through his camera that he would not truly enjoy just being there.  He calmed down about the photos when we went inside the nature store and found a great little guide book that included color photos of all of the animals with information as well.  The "Critter Guide" was only $6 and enabled him to stop focusing on taking pictures and just enjoy seeing everything in person and making memories.

This is truly a destination not to be missed!

The park is open through November 11, 2010

Daily from 9:30 to 4:30,

but once inside, visitors can stay until 6:00pm.

Yes, it was a blast.  He LOVES taking photos and out in the country, the animals just don't sit still for you!  He has a lot of blurry photos of skunks, deer, and racoons skeedaddling away from him.

This sounds like great fun!  Better than a zoo, even!

It is great Tish.  It's the closest thing to a zoo that we have here.  I have to admit that I was not thrilled about seeing a mountain lion, but fortunately he stayed in his cave since it was a little warm Saturday.  After coming upon one in the wild years ago, I could live a long and happy life without ever seeing one again.  I was under the mistaken impression that we didn't have them here in Maine.  Silly me.  I have seen plenty of moose in the wold, but they never fail to amaze me and it was awesome to see one so close up.  He was HUGE!.

I'll never forget looking out the back window at my son's house in AK and coming face to face with a moose!  They are scary big.  They stand right in the middle of the road and DARE you to drive ahead!

I too, could go without seeing a mountain lion up close.  The big cats are a little scary.

Yes they are!  And you never want to accidentally wander in between Mama and baby for either of them. :)

Instead of leaving carrots for the Reindeer on Christmas Eve, my Grandson left them for the Moose!

Kristen ... Not being familiar with the geography, I didn't realize that "Gray" was a place ... so the title really suprised me coming from the chairperson of the Maine Chamber of Relocation and All Things Great in Maine Council.  It looks like a real treat for kids of all ages ... thanks for sharing!

Too cool Tish!

LOL Jack!  I'll have to try to fit my new title on my office door. :)  I also never thought about that since I'm so used to hearing it as a place name and not a color.

Your son is adorable, Kristen! Even in your photo he's holding a camera! I have these same "tussles" with my kids! What a great localism post (and I consider Massachusetts to be local enough for me to put it on our places to see when we head up to Maine). Thanks!

Nina:  Thanks, he's a blast!  He does love his camera.  I love that you don't have to worry about buying and developing film with digital cameras!  Kids nowadays can snap away.  He's got my old one because I just couldn't get the darn thing to take a descent photo and it seems to work just fine for him!

After his initial fervor to snap photos, he finally decided to just take 2 of each animal and then put his camera in it's holder and soak up the experience.

You are just "down the road," it's a great place to visit. :)

This is an amazing post, Kristen, for the Maine Wildlife Park - wow!  You have mentioned everything that anyone would need to know, awesome things to do and your pictures are adorable!  Okay, actually it's your son that makes them so adorable - what a cutie!

Thanks Leesa!  Terribly shameless of me, I know, but he always makes these trips more fun. :)  He wasn't the only kid walking around wide eyed and mouths gaping open.  I even heard another little boy use his favorite phrase of "this is the BEST day EVER!"

It's one of those great places that is fun for grown ups too where adults can do the things they've set up for kids, have fun with it, and not feel silly...like spread your arms to see how you compare to the wingspan of the different raptors.  With my long monkey arms I made it to the Turkey Vulture.  I was hoping for one of the more graceful birds, but that's what I measured up to . :)

Thanks for the feature.

Sounds like a lot of fun, Kristen.  My kids would love this and, like your son, enjoy taking a ton of pictures as well. I would imagine the albino porcupine would be a fan favorite.

Yes, it was pretty wild to see that and the white racoon.

This is just so much fun to read about because of your great descrptions, details and pictures and because I love Maine. I miss New England and my outdoorsy son would have to have been dragged away from a place like this. I wonder what my wingspan would be? I am 5'3"with short arms. Thanks for the post and I love the look of your blog!
