The Venice Canals digging in 1904.
The Venice Canals present day!
Have you ever been to a place and wondered about the history of it? How the place came to be or how a place obtained its name. Let’s take a short journey and look at the history of “Venice of America” or as we know it today Venice, California.
Venice, California dates all the way back to the year 1890. It is because of one man’s vision by the name of Abbott Kinney, a wealthy tobacco mogul and world traveler, that this amazing place exists still today.
Mr. Kinney transformed a deteriorating marshland West of Los Angeles into the “Coney Island of the Pacific.” Despite disbelief and opposition, Abbott Kinney’s dream materialized in grand style. He envisioned a resort town culturally reminiscent of Venice, Italy. Complete with canals, gondolas, amusement piers, hotels and Venetian- Styled structures.
Who needs to go to Venice, Italy when we have Venice, California in our own backyard, thanks to one man’s dream!
