Santa Monica: The Police will conduct DUI Checks on November 19th, 2010. I was reading in today's Local paper( for Marina Del Rey, Westchester, Santa Monica, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Mar Vista, Del Rey and Venice) Wow, this is unbelievable, not what you think.

I have no problem with the Santa Monica Police conducting a sobriety/driver's license checkpoint in the city of Santa Monica during the evening of Friday November 19th, 2010. My point is, why is there a quarter page announcements in the paper? The Law is the Law, if you choose to violate the Law, then I would expect, if you get caught then pay the fine or whatever the law requires as the punishment.

The State is in a financial quagmire, the city is not doing much better, why not just capture the guilty parties and let them pay for their misdeeds?

This to me is not solving the problem of identifying the offenders, nor will this get them off the streets. This in my opinion is just a poor political maneuver by the politicians and the police of Santa Monica Police Department to show that they are doing something about the Drunk Drivers who cause fatalities in the City. So what will the result be?

Friday night many Santa Monica Restaurants will be wondering why there is a slow night for their business. The other neighboring communities will be grateful at the same time they will wonder why the extra business for them.

So if you would like more information about this event, please contact SGT Jeff Wiles at the Santa Monica Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit at 310.458.8950   or SGT Jay Trisler at 310.458.8471.

HA!  Seems to me that the mororists that read this paper are likily to change their route, if, in their drunken state, they can remember to do so.

OR, the police could have announced this route as a ruse and really plan to patrol alternate likely routes.

Or, they could be in both places.

Or,. . . . . . .

I've never been a fan of the "guilty until proven innocent" method. But if this keeps one drunk driver off the road, then the mission is a successful one.

Lenn, I have seen them over the years at major roads like Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica, who knows......

Craig-- you have a point I think their statistics would be higher if it was un-anounced.....

So, Endre, how'd it turn out?  Here in the Phoenix area, the police announce ALL THE TIME where they're going to be - they still get hundreds if not THOUSANDS of drunk drivers.  It's so sad!!!!!  But, like Craig said, if it keeps one drunk driver OFF the road, it's a slightly victory.

We have so many FREE groups who will drive you and your car home if you've had too much.  I say, get their number, put it in your pocket and use it.  Or, stay home and drink.

The night before Thanksgiving is one of, I think the most dangerous nights to be out because it is the biggest drinking evening for the whole year.  you are best to just stay in with family and/or friends.  The police will be out and searching. It is a wise thing not to play your cards in a negative way.  Have a great day Endre!

Juli you and Craig make a great point about deterrent is better than no action at all,  just believe if there are rules, than one should obey them or pay the consequences....

Carole & Laura, nice for you to stop in and comment, I agree with all the other options available why risk it......

There’s an announcement in the paper because the law requires them to announce such checkpoints. Down here we actually have a daily piece that tells us where checkpoints are, and it’s amazing that drunks and those driving with no license or insurance still go through them.

I look at3it differently. IF that announcement only kept one person from driving under the influence, it could have saved a life.

Be aware that if you go through one of those checkpoints, they can look for more than just drunks, and they can impound your vehicle if you are drunk, driving with no license, no insurance, blackout windows, etc. I speak from experience, except when it happened to me, it wasn’t my car I was driving. It was my husband’s, and he had blackout windows, which are illegal.
