View of the island cave, and on the left sea lions and seals lollygagging as we looked on.

Close to the coast of Santa Barbara, we have the Channel Islands, (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara)  This group of islands is designated as a US National Park.  These islands represent an ocean environment that is unique because visitors can be privvy to the Southern California coast as it once was.  It is home to unique animals, plant life, and is considered as an architectural resource.

According to the Park' website, "the Channel Islands are often called the "North American Galapagos, because they are home to over 150 endemic or unique species."

The first bald eagle chicks to hatch in over 50 years took place in the Channel Islands in 2006.  The public interest in this amazing event estabilshed a bald eagle webcam.

Ron and Alexandra, as one not fond of caves, I find this photo curious, drawing me in and would love to go inside this cave....with lots of lights :)

Gordon and Cherise,

We plan on exploring further, especially since the blue whales will be migrating this way.  We went a couple years ago, and the whales were a no show.  The best part was seeing a pod of dolphins (800 +) frolicking, greeting the boat, and the fact that the water was so clear you could see their white bellies.  We get the best Santa Barbara shrimp in season from there (10miles out), and the dolphins also participate in the shrimp feast, and we also get the spiny lobster (tail only), from that habitat.  We feel so blessed to have clean water, and we take a little credit as we were part of the "Heal the Bay" movement when we lived in Los Angeles and saw the improvement in the water... Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us on AR. I didn't notice the sea lions until you mentioned them in the article, so I'm glad you did.

Tina,

Those creatures know how to blend in to the rocks, except for that blonde looking one.  They are so much fun, during low tide they gather on the reefs, and you can get them to clap and bark by clapping your hands.  A

The Seal Lions and Seals look like they are sunbathing on that dark rock. I bet that's a really warm place to lay around.

Thank you for sharing the photo.

Alexandra,

Love your posts on the SoCal Coast.  It really is a unique area.  I marveled at historic photos that showed a host of oil wells and piers off the SB beach just 100 years ago.  Hardly any evidence of that now...

Steve,

We still have those wells pumping, and they are lit up at night in colored lights, and I am sure they are taking extra precautions these days.  We love the coast. A
