Discount Realtors... What is Fair? 8%?.. 7%?.. 1%? Why pay more?

Does it depend on the confidence the Realtor actually has in their ability to actually sell a home? Does it depend on what they plan to do to sell the home? I would be afraid of the Realtor that says they will sell for so much less than the average price. What am I giving up? Why do they not think they are worth as much as their competitors?

I would not want the person earning the least money possible advising me on my largest investment... But that may just be me... I am looking to have the most professional person list my biggest investment, it doesn't even come down to price.

Discounting Realtor fees sounds counter productive to me... Who is going to work harder? The person working to sell your $500,000 house making 7% or $35,000.00 or the Realtor that stands to make 1% or $5,000.00?  All while you continue to make $3500 a month payments!

I am a Mortgage Planner. I advise products and strategies to people that are usually making the largest purchase they will likely make this decade. I do not discount fees. I know that even with my normal fee my client will be better off with me than going to some credit union or bank where they are getting their advice from someone that just moved off the teller line last week.

Well Good luck selling!

I continue to be surprised when I see anyone in the real estate industy using the word "discount" in relation to fees.  Since there is no set fee there can't possibly be a discount.  All commissions are negotiable and saying an agent who only charges 1% will do less than one that charges 7% is without merit.

Hi Ingrid,  I guess your post is really about the " impression " left by someone advertising a " discounted " fee.  I agree that, for me , it would leave me with a sense that the person knows what they are worth !

Cindy—Yep. I am guessing they are meaning a discount from the average? Also, I was not saying I was asking... 7 question marks...

Bill—Yep.

Thanks for the comments!

I still believe in "you get what you pay for" also if i can't sell myself and my commission split how will I ever be able to sell the house for fair or more than fair market value?
