Given the state of the economy, are we all cocooning more at home? By cocoon, I'm not referring to the kind from outer space depicted in the movie of that name, but rather to the lifestyles trend of our staying more at home for both work and pleasure, avoiding going out to spend more money.
The term was originated in the early 1990s by trends forecaster Faith Popcorn (a pseudonym for a more complicated name) when rough times -- but not as rough as now -- dictated a stay-at-home preference. Since that time, all the new technology has added and abetted a new wave of cocooning. It might be called "e-cocooning."
How that has influenced our home design, furnishings and accessories is an interesting study in adapting to the world's warp speed changes in the past 20 years.
